I put my shovel in the trunk space and it rattles a lot. Wondering how people keep theirs in place : )
Also exterior mount is not an option since I'm pretty sure it will get stolen within days given the place I live in.

mine is a folding shovel and its shoved under the back seat. i keep a hand towel wrapped around it to keep it from moving and clanking around. The hand towel is super useful as well.

I put mine in the same spot as you, I just filled the empty space with marshmallows so I have some high-calorie emergency food...just in case. Hope that helps, indeedy.

My shovel is pretty dirty so that I don't want to let it touch anything... but getting a bag to wrap it may be a good idea. Will try that!

Wow I didn't know shovels can fold. Looks like it's time for me to do some shopping. Is folding shovels as strong as the regular one?

See @AcesandEights example above. Mine is a similar design, all metal, hasn't failed me yet. I especially like the ones you can lock the spade at an angle, super useful for certain types of digging.

Yeah, I just grabbed the first google image I found, but a lot of folks use a mil-surplus entrenching tool, a metal folding shovel. They work, but aren't the same as a full-size shovel; although, often a full-size shovel is too long or awkward to use under a vehicle.

This is what I carry. Very strong, compact, has a case. Fits easily in the back cubby.
