So I installed the Rugged Ridge Hinge on the tailgate and before I add the tire carrier and larger tire I am now thinking i should take off the bolts and put something in between the hinge plate and the tail gate (where it goes over the non-tire part - i.e. the giant "X"). It is pretty tight to the tailgate which is good and bad - bad in that I am concerned that even if it shifts or moves a tiny bit it will mar up the paint, then if i ever decide to switch to something else, the design is so specific that it will be entirely obvious exactly where this was!

Any ideas on what I could use...what came to mind for me was something like the below - but i dont know if its strong enough to do anything.

Maybe a SUPER thin rubber gasket but where would i get that?!

You think something that thin would protect in between tailgate and the reinforcement? Thx!!
Hard to say for sure. I know the helicopter tape is pretty thick and tough. You could also use thin foam with a self-adhesive or double-sided tape. Something like a weatherstrip.

Agree. Kind of a guessing game. Just trying to brainstorm what the options are...

Why would you change it? Not going to wear out.

Have you looked at ppf film? There are cheapo brands online where you can buy a little bit. Since it will be hidden, it won't matter if it's quality film or not. Should be able to carefully cut it against that part, then install it.
