While waiting for my JLUR392 to arrive I did an impromptu parts difference and cost analysis of the 392 option.

*Note this is a rough and dirty analysis for entertainment purposes only so please don't do a William Wallace on me . ;)

Please feel free to add facts, perspective or opinion to this exercise.

So I started with the nearest comparison model opted as close as the 392 and extrapolating what is left. That along with the known modifications, upgrades and improvements Jeep and others have published.

Jeep "Build and Price" comparator. I configured is a JLUR 3.0ED with nearly every option (ala 392). Near as I can figure, the cost difference is right around $12k for the 392 option.

Differences from the Non-392 Rubicon........

* Cost difference in engine packages. See Note #1 for a SWAG estimate
* Functional Hood
* Beadlock capable wheels
* Dual mode exhaust
* Select-trac w paddle shift
* Off-Road + (Rear locking Diff)
* Rear brakes (upgraded)
* Frame and suspension upgrades - lots of stuff here including R&D
* Axle upgrades
* Transmission Upgrade
* R&D and Testing

I'm positive there are more components than I have listed. here. As more info comes from owners and other reliable sources I can update this list.

My takeaway from this is all positive.
Yeah $80k is big nut for a Wrangler but as others have mentioned a relative bargain compared to retrofitting a V8 into a new JLUR - without a warranty.

Anyway, hope this helps or is at lease mildly interesting.

Best,
Bret.

* Rear locking Diff
All Rubicons have locking front and rear diffs. So this is not an advantage of the 392.

Let's be honest: You're paying for that monster engine, the giggle factor, and the fact that it will almost certainly be the last V8 offered in a Wrangler. There is zero "need" for a 392. None. A V6 Rubicon XR will be every bit as capable on the trail and has a longer range.

But who gives a crap? The 392 is a badass hot rod. I totally understand why people buy them -- but it's 100% an emotional purchase, just like a Corvette or 911. I hope you enjoy yours!

True on the diff, I was referring to the rear on the 392 able to lock at high speed vs 4L in std Rubi.
It is probably an option that adds versatility vs cost.
And thanks, I will.
Best,
Bret.

So, what do we get for twelve large?

My takeaway from this is all positive. I'm a value driven individual and although some may not see this assessment the way I do., it may however allay others apprehension in laying out an additional 16% over a full zoot Rubi.
Yeah $80k is big nut especially for a Wrangler but as others have mentioned to retrofit a V8 into a new JLUR would cost you more - without a warranty.

Note #1: A crate 3.0ED: $8,840 / Crate 392: $10,060. Plus the unknown cost of Wrangler specific engineering, upgrades ie: oil pan, alt relocation, HydroGuide intake, engine management changes, etc
I understand what you're trying to do but this is kind of like trying to financially justify a Ferrari. A Ferrari will never make economic sense but people covet the hell out of them.

Hahaha, I get the comparo young gun. But not a justification for me. I wanted one and was willing to pay for one before Jeep created it.
Although I'm not an F-car owner I do appreciate them. Depending when and what Ferrari you bought may make tremendous economic sense.
Best,
Bret.

Stronger Transmission in the 392, at least 10 more spark plugs than other Wranglers, I think maybe 1 more quart of engine oil, off-road plus unless they added the option on new Rubis, probably a few other things I'm not thinking about right now.

12 years in the Army, 3 tours, many brothers/sisters never made it home. My point is I agree the 392 in a Wrangler makes no sense. But, life is short and very precious. If the budget allows, buy what makes you/us happy and smile and laugh as much as possible. We are all dead, so while we are alive do whatever it takes to have fun and be happy. I don’t give a rats arse what anyone else thinks about the 392 or how they subjectively praise or trash it….it’s what I want, it will make me happy, and ultimately that’s all I care about and can control. Oh, it makes absolutely no financial sense and I’m perfectly at peace about that :rock:
