So I went back to previous research on this topic and found that I didn’t remember correctly (it sucks getting old).

The HALT act was passed in 2021 and it told the NHTSA to issue a rule by late 2024 concerning drunk driving prevention technology. Still no rules due to privacy concerns, costs, feasibility, etc. and what technology to use.

Bill 6563 was introduced in 2023 called the “No Kill Switches In Cars” act because of all the rumors that the HALT program was going to be expanded. The bill failed to pass…
A new bill was introduced this year for same. It'll pass this time.... ;)

Dang, glad I have a 2023, looks like 2024's are the ones that had the issue. That is a little scary for sure.

It looked to be any of them with the Uconnect, but then again, a good hacker gets what they want.

For anyone interested in this, you can reach under the dash on the right side of the steering column and physically unplug the telematics module via the grey connector. You will get no warning lights displayed on the dash, but assist/sos will no longer function.

This will prevent all OTA updates and vehicle tracking.

I wonder what compensation, if any, Jeep will offer to the owners who had to pay for tows, missed work, or were placed in danger. Probably a $500 credit on their next purchase of a Jeep :headbang:

It _might_ be OK to pull that plug on a pre-24; the architectures are fundamentally different, though. I have read accounts by several people who pulled the cell modem out of the pre-24s, though.

I can say I've had it unplugged on my 24 for a week with no problems.

Give the unplugging a try and let us know? You can always plug it back in if it gets weird ...

This incident is not an indictment on automation or over the air updates or technology.

Tesla has been doing over the air updates for 13 years. And in their vehicles they can update EVERYTHING over the air - down to steering and brake modules. And even when they were a tiny startup company, on the verge of bankruptcy, they never bricked cars en masse like Jeep just did.

In fact, the very vehicles that can have everything updatable over the air tend to be the most secure, the most tested, etc. Because they take it seriously and engineer it from the ground up for it.

This is an indictment on the decrepit Stellantis corporate culture, where quality, customer experience, etc viewed as an annoyance, not a core focus.

That is why I caution people from buying anything that is not in the main stream of Stellantis. Look how badly they screwed up the manual transmission. Look what a mess (leading to cancellation) they made of the diesel. 4xe and Wagoneer S were a complete disaster.

Sticking to the mainstream options (e.g. Auto ZF, 2.0 Global Midsize Engine) that are sold widely is no guarantee, but will improve your odds of not having catastrophic issues that they don't treat seriously.
You can point toward incompetency, the fact remain, this is dangerous and should be properly oversee.

Reality is while this is a nice feature the current and future implication does light up some red light in my book but I do also wear my tinfoil hat today 🤪

Yes. Incompetence is dangerous. If your airline pilot, your heart surgeon, you fuel truck driver, are incompetent, bad s$@# will happen.

That is life - that is why you should choose a competent car company, a competent airline, a competent heart surgeon, etc.

Sadly, Jeep/Stellantis are not competent.

You pointed professionnel to be competent, not the hospital, airline, delivery company. I do think you are mixing your feelings towards FCA on the matter of improper SDLC. Or in plain words you are biased towards FCA is bad, while I say that oversight or regulation framework would be a good thing regardless of the company.

It's almost comical that most of the failures are linked to so-called safety features.

At this rate, 10 years from now no one will know how to drive a straight line without 360 cameras to look at.

My cousin already doesn’t check her mirrors because the car will tell her if it’s safe to change lanes…
