[Astro Jeep]

I am looking for an off grid communication device. It doesn't necessarily have to have voice communication, but at a minimum it would need texting abilities.

I am about a month away from starting my build on my JLURD, and my goal is to spend a lot of time away (Up to a week at a time.) from civilization out in BLM land doing astrophotography. I will be far enough out that if anything happened to me, I would need a way to communicate.

I've had good luck with the Garmin In-Reach mini, at only $350 and a relatively inexpensive subscription it's cheap insurance.

Been using an inReach SE since 2013.

Works great, long battery life in storage and use, never out of coverage, for almost a decade now.

Loaned it to a buddy who had to contact a SAR team for a Mt Whitney extraction... life saver.

Wife gets updates on longer excursions, keeps everyone connected. Trips south of the boarder are more managable.

I have used an Garmin inReach Mini for several years on many hikes. I am on the cheap $11.95 monthly plan, with unlimited outgoing text messages from a choice of 3 presets that you set in advance, and generally per-message otherwise. I also use the tracking feature. If this isn't for hiking and is staying with the Jeep, I would get the regular inReach rather than the Mini.
