Recommendations on bike rack for JLU

Looking for recommendations for a bike rack for 2019 JLU Wrangler. Trying to find something reasonable and light weight as we will most likley be taking it on and off when we use the bikes. Mostly will be using it for short rides to trails or to transport on a longer trip. Do you recommend one that attaches to the tire or go with a hitch mount? Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

We would have to add hitch receiver and extender to vehicle if hitch bike rack is the recommendation, but won't be doing much towing if any.

@dunegirl Hi. Already having a back hitch, I think, changes the decision rubric here. Do you have a back hitch, or were you planning to get one anyway independent of bicycle carrying?

OP, as mentioned above, if you don’t have a hitch, adding one just for a bike rack is expensive.. and, with them, you “normally” can’t open the tailgate. Some models do pivot or swing. The one you posted does but only without bikes attached. That can be a pita if you load the bikes and then need something in the back.

Quadratec sells that as well and it seems to be a good product. There are one or two others on QT’s site that also seem ok.
OP, with this option, you don’t need to add a hitch and you also can get the tailgate to swing.

that said, if you have big 35 or 37” tires on your tailgate already, adding this extra weight might not be appropriate.

Hey there! I did a BUNCH of research on the forums related to this particular issue and landed on this one from 1Up. It is certainly expensive but from the various threads on this forum, it is the best one to mount to a tow hitch and then be able to pivot for loading and unloading the back without removing bikes.

I have the Tow Package on my JLURD but still had to purchase a tow-hitch extender/drop as I have a 37" spare and it causes issues with this rack sitting correctly. Here is the link to that as well. I was going to set everything up on my Jeep today so I can add photos of the set-up. Searching for "bike racks" on the forum will give you a ton of insight as people have hunted for solutions before; here is one I read through. Definitely recommend doing that, especially depending on your tire size or after-market tire mount situation.

According to the link, this mount doesn’t fit a JLU (Probably the backup camera).

LOL ... totally did not check..oops!! Yeah, it's most likely going to cover the camera, but I think any bike rack placed there will.
