It's never been economical. Admittedly I'm not up on recent research, but they've been working on algae bio diesel for some time, but extraction was as concern. Last I knew the focus was on trying to find a way to extract without having to kill the algae.However, there is a process to make biofuels from algae. I'm surprised there is not more talk about this.
There's also research on bio gasoline and diesel generated from modified e coli, but again, these never seen to result in a commercial product.
