I know there have been several threads on this forum, but I don't see where anyone has found a solution. Did Jeep ever re tune the 3.6 pentastar to address the knocking some of us are getting under load?

I have 2018 JL 3.6 Manual with 12000 miles. It has been knocking under load since day 1. Most noticeable shifting into 2nd and 3rd.

@JeepCares have you gotten any answer from the engineers?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Jason,
I don't see any TSBs in our system that would address what you are experiencing. If you visit your dealer in the near future or are currently working with them, we would be happy to get you connected with a Case Specialist. Feel free to send us a private message.

I don't have any hands on experience, because I went the 2.0/auto route, but my reading on this forum brings to mind a couple of questions.

Are you using a quality, tier 1 fuel (Mobil, Exxon, etc.)?

Are you possibly lugging the engine by not keeping the rpm's high enough?

Thanks for the recommendations. I have been purchasing tier 1 exclusively since I noticed the knock. I have tried higher octane, but only with marginal improvements. There is still a noticeable knock.

What I was hoping to hear was that Jeep had heard the complaints and had a revised tune, or they were working on one (at a bare minimum).

From what I read here and hear from other Jeep owners this is a common problem. It seems like this should be fairly easy to resolve with the software controlled air/fuel mix/knock sensors and such. It is not like the internal combustion engine is new technology.

It is so disappointing to think that such a large company with a reputation at stake doesn't have the balls to admit a mistake and resolve it. This is like a page out of "Customer Relations 101".

If it isn't resolved soon, they will have lost me as a customer for life. And this is my 6th Jeep in 30 years!

The PUG, Pentastar UpGrade, has much higher compression than the 3.6 in the JK. I have noticed that I have to run 89 when it is under load, or very high temperatures to avoid knock/retarded timing.

I think not all tier one gasoline is created equal? I did extended tests this past summer with BP and Shell - same octane ratings and at similar temperatures - and concluded that Shell resulted in noticeably less pinging than BP. I wanted to test Exxon too but couldn't do it before the temperatures started to fall in August.
