2020 Unlimited Rubicon
Hey all,

I've had a 2016 Willys 2-door manual for about 18 months and have thoroughly enjoyed the Jeep experience. That said, the 2-door's limited storage space is limiting my use of the vehicle. We're a family of 3 living in Colorado and we've got to rely on my wife's Volvo XC90 to do almost anything outdoorsy. I'm hoping an Unlimited will change that.

My intended use of a new 2020 JLUR will be:
  • Daily driver - Mostly to/from the bus stop. I only drive about 5 miles a day, but have the occasional commute of 20-40 miles a day to/from clients.
  • Off-roading - I've taken the Willys off-road and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I've mostly stuck to the Road 68J just west of Boulder, CO which is listed as "Moderate" on AllTrails. I'd like to explore more.
  • Weekend family hauler - We camp, hike, and overnight in the mountains. I also love taking the doors off and tooling around town on the weekends.
So here's my intended build from the Jeep Build & Price site for 2020s (commentary in italics):

EXTERIOR

  • Firecracker Red Clear-Coat Exterior Paint - wife likes Granite Crystal Metallic and Firecracker Red, I'm all-in on red
  • Body-Color Fender Flares - I originally did not want painted fenders given the durability of plain plastic, but I like the look
  • LT285/70R17C OWL Off-Road Tires - I like the white lettering
  • Black 3-Piece Hard Top - I've debated Body-Color hardtop but think I prefer how the black top breaks up the lines

INTERIOR

  • Leather-Trimmed Bucket Seats in BROWN - the red dash clashes with the Firecracker Red. I like the silver/gray dash that comes with the brown leather seats, but I've yet to see a Firecracker Red Jeep with the brown outside of the website
  • Uconnect® 4C NAV with 8.4-Inch Display
  • Alpine® Premium Audio System - Not sure I want this. Does the subwoofer take up cargo space?
  • Cargo Tub Liner by Mopar®
  • All-Weather Floor Mats by Mopar®

PACKAGES

  • Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electrical Group - Mostly for the AUX buttons, but can imagine towing something one day
  • Steel Bumper Group - I don't see myself going for aftermarket bumpers, and love the "OEM+" look of these.
  • LED Lighting Group - A must given how poor my stock JK lights are
  • Cold Weather Group - A must given Colorado winters

POWERTRAIN

  • 3.6L V6 24V VVT Engine Upg I w/ESS - A strong case can be made for the 2.0T given I live at 5200' and regularly drive to 12,000', but I really want a manual transmission.
  • 6-Speed Manual Transmission
  • 4.10 Rear Axle Ratio

It should look exactly like this:

I would strongly suggest the Safety Group. I surprised how much I use it.

I would consider the proximity entry. It is the one option that can't be added after it is built. Great feature! The safety group and advanced safety group are also nice to have. Surprised at how much I actually use mine. I still check my blind spots the old fashioned way out of habit, but the features are a nice addition to my driving habits.

If the Jeep will be your wife's daily driver (doesn't sound like it), I would get the Granite. Otherwise you do you. I'm a big fan of the matching hard top but the black on red is a good looking contrast.

The alpine system is great, and no, the subwoofer does not take away any cargo space.

Generally, the aftermarket brings better options at a lower cost than the Mopar add-ons. I went with weathertech front/back/cargo mats, and still have the nice factory carpet mats as a switchable option. If you go Mopar, you pay more and you lose out on the carpet ones.
