Exactly this. On the front axles there is a slinger aka dust shield to keep dirt out of the tubes.

Oil slinger. Also doubles as a paddle wheel for deep water crossings.

Looks like something that would snap on a transmission or battery coolant line

agree with the above post. that does not look like the oil slinger for the axle shaft...
