Pulled a P0456 CEL that was not fuel cap related and I couldn't reset. Took it to the dealer and they found a failed ESIM (Evaporative Systems Integrity Module). Just posting so others will know one of the causes for a P0456 other than a loose fuel cap. Apparently STAR S18250000025 is another cause.

What did they find?
They said the gas cap must not have been on tight enough, (BS), and it threw off a test of the EVAP system. They reset everything and all is well. They wanted to charge me $150, because a loose gas cap is not covered under warranty. I told them I know how to put on a gas cap, it wasn't loose.

Sounds like dealer BS to me. I bought a Panlong Bluetooth ODB2 Scanner from Amazon for somewhere around $10. That plus a free app on the phone you can diagnose the check engine light and reset it. First time I threw a P0456 it reset. The second time it would not reset. If it doesn't reset then you know for sure (unless you have a defective fuel cap) that it isn't the furl cap. Good luck.

You’re most welcome, kimmonia. We look forward to hearing from you! If you wouldn’t mind, it would be greatly appreciated if you could reach out a few days before you visit your dealer. This will allow us enough time to escalate your case and connect you with a Case Specialist before your visit. Feel free to reach out should you have any questions in the meantime, we’re always happy to help.
