A local dealership and I can’t figure out what’s causing this noise that only occurs after a long drive (30-45 minutes) and then putting the Jeep in reverse.

The sound lasts about 10-30 seconds and then goes away. The Jeep only has to be in reverse, doesn’t have to be moving in reverse to cause the noise but it noticeably has an affect when turning the tires back and forth.

Dealership has been trying to diagnose now for over a month and tried to tell me it was bad gasoline and that I should use premium gas 91 and higher octane moving forward. This is the 3.6L engine which only requires 87 octane gasoline.

I argued that with it being over a month and it cycling through a few tanks of gasoline that this can’t be the case. It’s on it’s 4th trip back to the dealer.

I did see in the owners manual where slight knocking under low RPM is normal but what is defined as slight?

Any ideas of what this could be? I use my Jeep for off roading and do not want to be left stranded.

Mine does that as well, super loud after I reverse to street park. Have not taken it in yet.

my dealer put an additive in the fuel but it didn’t stop the ticking sound. My friend suggested I use high octane 93 fuel which I did and the sound has gone away. I shouldn’t have to pay extra to put 93 gas into a 3.6L V6 JLU but it’s what I’ve had to do for the last 6 months. Still trying yo find the root cause of the noise while my Jeep is under warranty. Please post if your dealer figures it out. Thanks!

Hey guys what engine option do you have? I have the 3.6 with etorque and it happens and sound exactly like this.

Only when in reverse with steering wheel at an angle. Going straight back its fine.

Thing is This only happens after a long drive, driving 20 minutes it doesn't happen even when engine has been well heated up, going forward it doesn't happen. the engine doesn't ping otherwise. At this point I doubt its a engine problem.

Do you have etorque?

I run 87 without any sound other than this specific condition same as OP, after long drive, reverse, steering wheel turned. Is it really the gas that solved the problem or you are just unable to trigger it yet? Do you have etorque.

update: so i did try putting in Premium fuel as others have suggested. every time i use premium, the noise is very small to non existent. regular gas makes it come right back. for the smarter ones out there....

how can fuel quality be causing this?

It’s called fuel knock. It’s a programming issue with spark timing that octane rating has a strong effect on. It is harmless but annoying.

but wouldn't that happen all the time the engine is running.? this only happens on reverse and with wheel turned AFTER a decent amount of driving.

no, spark timing is ECM adjusted based on load. It is based on temperature.

Has anyone found a solution to this? My Jeep just started making this noise in reverse too. Turning the wheel seems to affect it as well while in reverse.

better fuel.

Better oil also. API SP is specifically designed to lessen LSPI knock.

Anyone has any updates??
So I have a 2023 Rubicon making the same noise as Astheros jeep.
The dealer put my case in the STAR program, They changed my motor and transmission, still making the noise. They told me they have a team working on it, but have not figured out.
