Hello everyone,

First time poster here, sorry if this is in the wrong spot! Proud new owner of my first Wrangler, 2020 JLU Sport S 2.0..

Unfortunately, I am here to the JL forum to try and decipher a noise I started hearing last week--a tapping (kind of?) sound when accelerating off of a cold start. Once engine is warmed, the sound pretty much goes away completely. Only really hear it after the Jeep has been sitting all night and I start her the next day.

See video:

Thank you all for your help!

I think it’s the nature of this engine. I have the 2.0 and the thing sounds terrible for the first few miles of driving when cold. It’s quiet once warmed up. I purchased new and have 39,000 miles on my 2020 Rubicon.

I hope so, I’ve got 42k on my 2020. Gonna try some Lucas fuel injector treatment today, see if that quiets anything down lol. I’m only using 91 octane as well if that matters.

Yeah wow that’s crazy literally 40 mins apart. Will continue to investigate, another member mentioned it’s just the normal direct injection sound similar to a “sewing machine/diesel engine”..
I've heard they sound like sewing machines so could be normal

My 2019 with the 2.0 has that same noise. I normally wait a minute or two after starting until it reaches operating temp before putting it in gear. RPM's drop from around 1500 to 1000 at that point. Sound is still there but not near as pronounced. Once she's good and warmed up I barely notice it.....

Yup same here, I don’t put it in gear until rpm’s drop under 1000 either, but I really only hear it until I pull off my street.
Even after a day of work I don’t hear it, it’s really only after an overnight cold start.

Yeah, same sound from my Jeep. Note video below. Some say normal. Some say it’s just a matter of time before it grenades…. Apparently there have been documented issues with lower end rod knock leading to engine replacement with these 2.0s. Really hope that isn’t the case here….
