changed the oil and filter this afternoon and refilled with the Pennzoil 0W-20 synthetic and installed new mopar oil filter...luckily my local wal mart had both in stock.....heres the oil filter i pulled out and it looks fairly fresh so i would guess that it was changed, Im going to run about 50 miles and drain some to compare with the dealership oil

That’s a clean filter. I think you dumped fresh oil.

I've had 3 Pentastar engines and they are very easy on oil. Mine still looks like honey after a couple thousand miles. I think you got hosed.

I'm using the Wix WL10010XP filter, with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Full Synthetic 0W-20. Amazon has the filters readily available, and the local Walmart can get the 5qt jug of oil in a couple of days. They have the Platinum (not the Ultra Platinum) in stock.

The free oil changes are a nice touch, but I'd rather do my own. I'll take the tire rotations, though.

That is not fresh oil.
Its so simple to change oil on jk/JL that you should consider always doing yourself...

Penzoil ultimate platinum is one of the only oils to use CNG as a Base. Its super stable and even at 3k still looks pretty light. Really good stuff.

So I had the chance to check the oil after 51 miles and about 1.5 hrs of run time which was a slighty longer run time than the approx. 1 hr on dealership oil due to being more in-town miles. I will say that the oil is darker than I would have thought but still lighter than the dealership oil, maybe this is just due to the type of oil the dealership used although I dont know for sure what they use. The lighting is dark but looking at it in the cups you couldnt tell much difference but dabbing a paper towel in each does show a difference

tilting the cups and looking at the thin film that was left on the side does reveal a difference too

Synthetic oil doesn't have any quality that would make it generally get darker than conventional. If that were true, it would be the opposite, as the conventional base oils are less pure and refined. Some brands might darket quicker than others, but that would probably be due to one being darker than another to begin with.

You did exactly what I would have done. And, you now have the peace of mind of knowing you've got the right weight and a top quality oil in there.

Ours came out looking brown at 3K miles though the dipstick always look fairly clear (I checked it probably 6 times in that first 3K miles). My son did a video of the first oil change here:

You can see the oil being drained at 2:01 in if you want to skip ahead.

Yep. Some oil actually is darker than other brands when new in the bottle, too. Mine looks plenty dark even on the dipstick at 3k.

My thought is that they didn't change it. I put new oil in my truck and checked it 3000 miles later and it isn't that dark. But I don't know what type of oil they use and it may be pretty dark to begin with.
