Hey everyone! First time jeep owner here after I decided to trade in my mustang for a 2020 Rubicon. So far I love it but I still miss my mustang haha looking forward to a new group and learning more about the platform! Question about the windshield, are they prone to cracking? I test drove it Thursday and made the deal Friday morning and either over night or when they filled her up with gas a rock hit it and has big crack in it. Its at the dealer now getting replaced for free but I was just curious with how straight the windshield is if this can be an issue? Also, besides ace engineering, is there and other step option now that can be added? My fiancee said the mustang was too low and the jeep is now too high haha I can't seem to win!

What word can I use that's stronger than prone? ;)

I don't take my JL off road. The windshield cracked. Safelite replaced it. Sitting in my driveway, and as a result of no physical trauma, just (I believe) change in temperature that replacement cranked (although differently than the first time.)

Safelite replaced the second one no questions asked.

Yeah, no doubt the steepness of the windshield's slope plays a role.

Others could probably add details here or links to threads on protective film for the windshield and the status of Corning glass' Gorilla glass product on the JL. These help, but don't eliminate the issues.

It's a Jeep thing: meaning we sigh and accept it for all the other goodness that comes with owning one.

Thanks for that link. Even though this was a super spontaneous purchase I still did some research and guess I missed this. The search function doesn't work to well here I guess so I will use Google now haha.

Lower the windshield, less likely to take rock impacts that way.

Bought my Jeep in May 2019, so far no chips or cracks. People here have had a different experience than I have. Maybe I'm lucky, maybe others speed and tailgate. Over many years driving Wranglers I can say that I find the vertical windshield to hold up just as well as the cars I've owned over the same time frame. But truly, I really do drop the windshield as much as possible. With the JL's rearview mirror staying in place and only four bolts it is much more convenient to drop the winshield than Jeeps I had in the past. If I'm staying in town it's great, but 40 mph is about as fast as you can go comfortably. Wear glasses, preferably something impact resistant. You can find good options at a motorcycle shop. I carry a cheap cordless screw driver in the center console so I can use to put the windshield back up quickly if need be. You will need the windshield tie down straps, at least my 2019 did not come with them. $30 or $40 is what they should cost, my dealer wanted $60. Here is just the very first link I found on Amazon.

Welcome to the Jeep Life!
Thanks for the tip. I never rode a motorcycle and never had a car with a sunroof even so that will be a big change for me being "exposed" haha just taking the quick tops off is so different for me. Next step is taking the doors off this weekend!

Yeah just one issue I didn't think about! I can already tell I'm going to love the hell out of this thing so I will just live with it. I will look into the protective film to help it! Thanks!

Welcome and congrats! Look into the Mopar Performance rock rails:

Another alternative would be you getting down on your knees and offering your hands as steps. Every time. All day. Everyday.

Haha I feel like I already do that! But worth it since she gave me the Greenlight to make this purchase while saving for a wedding! Thanks I will look into those!

I cant contribute on the windshield issue but as far as the step, give it some time. My wife said the same thing about the height of our new Rubi. After a few weeks shes in and out of it like a champ no problem what so ever.

A new record I think. I had previously read of someone that had his windshield crack on the way home from the dealer after the purchase but I had never read of one cracking before it could be picked up after the test drive.

Later,
Johnny

These Wrangler windshields have a strange magnetic power over all stray rocks, on the freeway. Even if you are the only vehicle on the road, the rocks will find you. Trust me, I know.

What was funny was I just signed the "as is" part of the paperwork and just about finished when the owner of the dealership came in and asked us to stop. He showed me the small crack on the top of the window. Luckily he said they would replace it for free but they could of just let me go on my way and I would of been fighting with them. It was replaced today so back to having fun with it agian!
