Ive got my Jeep at the local off road shop doing some upgrades and repairs. HD Ball joints, yeti drag link and tie rod. They are also diagnosing the play in the steering wheel. They found that there is play in the steering gear box most likely due to the heavier wheel and tires (35’s) as well as the lift. Its the steel steering box and Ive got 26,000 miles on it.

The only aftermarket option they have is the PSC kit which is $4200 installed.

Theyve schedule me an appt with the dealer to try and get it warranty replaced but they will likely deny it due to the tires etc.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I know you can try to tighten the nut on it and sometimes that works. Should I replace it with a new steel one and just accept that every 20,000 or so miles this will come up again? I really dont wanna go the PSC route.

Play in steering box is not cussed by large tires. Might be a bit more noticeable with larger tires, but certainly not caused by them. Try adjusting gear lash and see what happens.

Thanks for the advice, Ill let them know. I took it home for the weekend but its going back Monday to be finished. Its substantially better with the new ball joints and drag link. The tie rod they ordered was the wrong one so its not going in till Monday. They also found the sleeve on the front track bar was loose so they tightened that down. Theres alot less play than before imo.

Tighten the box a little. Do a little bit at the time. You'll need heat for sure. Make sure to get the correct size allen wrench because it's still going to be hard to break it loose. You don't want to strip it.
