In the Charlotte area looking to get the 850re drain and filled and looking for someone who has done it before. Admittedly I’m a little apprehensive having never done it and I guess I need a baby sitter! I’m mechanically inclined and do my own diff fluid and oil changes but the trans stuff freaks me out cause I don’t want to mess up the procedure. I’ve watched the videos and read the write up but I do think having some assistance could be helpful.

Relax, the only thing about it is the mess you will make. To alleviate the mess in future, I bought an aftermarket transmission oil pan with a drain plug. 2 benefits - it has a drain plug and it holds an extra quart or so of fluid. It also has extra heat dissipation fins. Doing a drain and fill you will get max 6 quarts out. I forget dry fill capacity, but if memory serves it is about 9 quarts with the stock pan.
Procedure:
Remove skid plates if you have them
remove cross-member - 3 - 18 mm bolts
remove the fill plug
remove all pan bolts except the 4 corners
arrange your drain pan and remove the two bolts where you want the fluid to flow into the pan
slowly loosen the other two bolts - this is where you start making a mess.
Once the fluid is done making your garage floor look like scene from murder she wrote, take the pan to your bench and see what is in the bottom of the pan - especially on the magnets.
clean the pan and magnets and return them to where they were.
Clean gasket surfaces, etc.
Remove and replace the filter making sure to oil the o ring on the filter. ZF calls for 12 Nm on the filter nuts.
Install new gasket - politely ignore anyone that tells you to re-use the old gasket. I use a little (A LITTLE) RTV to keep the gasket in place and doing gasket things
Work from the center out when putting the pan back on - again to 10 Nm.
Reinstall the X-Member using the 18 mm bolts, torque to 50 ft-lbs.

Refilling
Your Jeep needs to be level
using a pneumatic or hand pump, do your best to get 5 - 6 qts of ZF 8 & 9 speed fluid back into the trans and replace the fill plug.
Start the engine and with your foot on the brake, slowly cycle thru all gear positions. Monitor the trans fluid temp - your looking fro 90f to 120f.
with the engine at idle, remove the fill plug and add more fluid until it drips from the fill hole.
You now have the correct qty of fluid in the trans.

Torque the fill plug to 25 ft-lbs.

So, here's where the pan with the drain plug come in handy.

What I do is put a few miles on the jeep, and using the drain plug, I drain the oil once more. Then refill once more.

I know this sounds stupid. But it is the only way I know to actually change 'most' of the fluid. Hooking the thing up to a 'flush" machine will remove and exchange all of your fluid, but it won't change that filter or get all of the clutch material out of the pan and off of the magnets.

Since we have a complete shop we have oil sample kits in stock. I always send in a sample of my trans fluid.

Don't be concerned, you've got this.

For less mess without a pan with drain - Get a fluid transfer pump, hand pump or 12 volt. Stick the suction hose into the fill hole and pump most of the 6 quarts out before dropping the pan.
