I moved to TX a few months ago. Would like to tint my front door windows. The law here is pretty generous, but I don’t want to go past whatever the rear windows are. I don’t have a way to measure, so DIY might not be an option.

https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/vehicle-inspection/window-tinting-standards

Questions:
  • Any DIY experiences welcome, or is professional service better?
  • Any advice on measuring rear window tint?
  • Is 15% a good value here in TX, hoping to not be visually crippled at night.
  • Long term experience welcome (hoping to avoid bubbling).
Hoping to avoid stupid mistakes.

35% is legal for front windows here in TX. Rear can be as dark as you like. Skilled professionals are too inexpensive to bother with DIY IMO.

Why would they get rid of inspections?

You also want to find shaded parking in all your locations, and also know which spot will have shade at which time of day. What looks like a shady spot in the morning may be full blaze on in the afternoon.

and when we say blaze on it doesn’t mean eating Cheetos.
Luckily i have indoor parking at home and work. Not so lucky on the road though.

I've always run darker tint all around. Had a warning once years ago, but never a ticket. Tint seems to be a secondary citation where I'm from. (Just my experience, not legal advice, the law is the law)

Luckily in Texas it's not illegal, though not sure how dark you can go.

The 15% tint has been perfect, just enough to take the edge off during the day, and light enough to be able to see at night. :)
