I'm about to put in an aftermarket head unit so I decided to stroll by a local Jeep dealership to verify what I needed to get my 8.4" radio's (unlock code) so it could possibly be used in another Jeep. Guy told me, "just need the VIN number and radio SN off the back of the radio." I was like cool. Then he was like but the unlock code is tied to the VIN of the Jeep so that unit won't work in another Jeep. I was like, Ummm that's not true. He proceeded to lean back, place his feet on the desk, spit into is spit cup and sarcastically reply, "Okay". I just kinda smiled and said...."so VIN and SN?" He said "yup"..... Cool thanks.
Anyway..... Am I missing something here? From what I gather I should be able to sell my 8.4" and all the other person will need is the unlock code? Am I the idiot or was it the Mopar parts guy?

If not, then what is the purpose of the code?
That's what was going through my head. Why wouldn't they just lock the radio to the VIN and be done? I didn't really want to get into an argument with the guy. He gave the information I was asking for so I was like "ok thanks". But he was kind of a cocky little punk, but I'm too old to argue with youngsters that are wrong.... Although every once in a while I will. I just wanted peoples input here to make sure I wasn't the know it all old fart who didn't know what I was talking about.

Well, he's partially right. the Guardian Services are tied to the VIN so the new owner wont be able to activate that but everything else will work fine, SiriusXM, Navigation, ORP etc. will work fine.

ORP etc. will work fine.
If the vehicle the radio is going into did not have ORP initially, they will not appear unless a Tazer or JSCAN is used to activate them.

True, you will need a subscription to XM too, the ORP and other things can be remedied just not Guardian Service.
