Hey all. Love my new JL (2019 Sahara, about 2 months old now), but I've been having some trouble with the stock tires recently.
About a month ago I got a nasty puncture in the sidewall of the rear passenger tire while driving on the rugged trails of Brooklyn. I didn't jump a curb or anything, but there's road junk all over the streets there so I figured it was a freak occurrence.
I found the stock tires at a local shop for ~$160 (which my research showed was a solid price) so I went ahead and bought one for the spare.
Then this weekend, the same thing happened but in my own neighborhood. Same tire (rear passenger) and similar puncture.
Although I'm grateful for the opportunity to practice changing tires, I'd rather do it at my leisure.
Has anyone else had a similar experience with this type of damage on the stock tires? If so, where do you get new tires from and how much do you typically spend?

TIA :please:

Sorry for your loss, maybe they need to spend some of that tax money collected on road repairs. Once could be wrote off as freak accident, twice?

Really weird puncture. I presume you were driving the jeep at the time. Any idea what actually did the damage? Only sidewall failures I've seen were from clipping a pointed curb. Might wanna look for something with a tougher sidewall... though I've never heard of Bridgestones being weak... though I did find a few scattered reports of sidewall failures on them (don't know if that's just random failures or not).

I did pinch a tire on a pointed curb but it didn't fail like that (different tire though). Still didn't take a chunk out like yours.

Rough neighborhood. I haven't had that issue in years and back then, it was due to driving in subdivisions under construction. Everything falls off the back of pickups and work trucks. Banding straps were the worst with the front tire kicking them up and then slicing my rear tire.

Looks like the work of a jealous husband.... lol, jk. It looks scuffed up around the puncture like you hit a curb or possibly a piece of concrete block, something along those lines. Definitely weird it happened twice on the same side on the same wheel. My buddy used to live up there, he said he lifted his rig and put on 37s to drive “onroad”’...:)

I'm no help OP but that is some impressive damage! Thanks for the pic!

I dunno if they even offer the Revo variant of the Dueler AT's anymore but my tire guy said he could definitely feel the Revos were heavier/thicker when unloading the truck. Of course that was over a decade ago....

Yup, I was driving at the time. Going about 35 when I felt it start wobbling. I had the Tire Pressure monitor open on the cluster display and watched it go from 37 psi to 0 in about 5 seconds (realistically, a lot quicker).
As far as what caused the damage, I suspect an upright piece of rebar might do the trick. Or possibly the metal reinforcement that they put on some of the sidewalks here. The rims are completely untouched, though, so it must've been a clean cut.
I was in the outermost lane, so it's not inconceivable that I brushed against the sidewalk while dodging the idiot drivers around here.
I'm pretty sure the second time was loose chunks of concrete on the road. It didn't puncture as thoroughly as in the picture, but it was fully deflated after 5 mins.
I brought the tire to Bridgestone shortly after it happened to see if it would be replaced under warranty. They insisted it was caused by a road hazard and not covered...

Haha since I'm already investing in new tires, I was thinking about doing the same. 37's sound real nice ;)

Haha glad you enjoyed it! Here's a vid of it in all its glory:

Yeah, I did notice the Revo variant when shopping around. I'll def look into those.
Also eyeing the Nitto Terra Grappler G2's.

Find a tire shop with a road hazard warranty? I’m not sure if any of them cover sidewall damage but it can’t hurt to look.

Yup, good tip. I've heard that Sears Auto offers a warranty.
