I hate to contradict but some of the low powered HTs are only 2 or 3 watts vs allowed 5W which is 3db and can be very noticeable. Also some of the very cheap versions have a low gain non removable antenna and again can make a noticeable difference. It is true in vehicle hard mounted 20W-50W versions will have even better performance. Watch Notarubicon on YouTube he has very thorough reviews.I have a big buck Yaesu handheld and it does not work better than my Baofeng's. Any performance differences of these low power handhelds are not measurable.
Performance improves greatly when you get a quality mobile radio with 25 to 50 watts.
If you are still needing a GMRS handheld get a low cost one and save your money for something useful for your Jeep.
