Midland makes both handheld CB and FRS/GMRS radios. I have both and both work great on my wheeling adventures. More and more the shift is to FRS/GMRS. I use the xtalker.

My two cents is if you need distance, go installed GMRS and get the license. If like me, it’s just for short distance comms while wheeling with a group, the handheld FRS like what I use works just fine.

I’m not interested in mounting a CB inside, but I’d like to get a solid handheld for trail use. Any good recommendations that are also reasonably priced?
I have two of these CB's. Cooltech is a sponsor. Removable, or just unplug and hide in center console. All of the controls are on the mic. Tune the antenna and they work pretty good for what they are. Sure there's better radios. But this is handheld, easy to remove and hide, affordable. Also added a small Mopar external speaker to mine.Cooltech sends a nice kit.

I’ll second the president brand. I have the mobile president Andy and love it. I also have a midland handheld I use when I’m with friends so that I can pass a radio to them to chat. The 2 groups I run with her still use CB though, so I have mine installed. One of our guys just uses a handheld though so you won’t be the only one in our group with the handheld. They work just as well.

I’ve always run CBs though since I have a few. When I move, I always put one in my wife’s car and we chat all the way to and from. I guess you can do that also with a GMRS mobile radio, just don’t have any mobile GMRS rigs.

I also have my ham license so I have that ability too but have yet to run into any jeepers around here that run ham.
I bought a relatively inexpensive one off Amazon so we’ll see how that works!!

I did the same thing. I bought a pair of these for the family. I have a Baofeng Ham, but no license so I just programmed the channels for GMRS. I tried them out recently on a little walk and 1.5 miles from inside my house to destination worked fine, loud and clear.
The Baofeng will throw a signal if you have a good antenna. I have the NA-771 antenna on mine, and have hit the West Branch repeater from the Zilwaukee bridge (66 miles), but the Zilwaukee is a BIG bridge with a lot of elevation. Typical performance is about 25 miles of range to access a repeater on flat ground. Very noisy front end, but for $25 it’s hard to beat.
