I'm looking around for a good quality handheld that I can give out when we're on the trail. Every time we go out, someone always needs a radio. My buddy had a Uniden PRO410HH, worked well, but as soon as you're out of sight, you're out of signal.

Not looking to add a roof antenna with it, just a quick lend out when we are out and about.

Any suggestions?

Sort of, kinda retired....mostly
You should do a bit more research on GMRS vs. CB in the Jeep community. GMRS is rapidly becoming the standard for a variety of reasons. Midland is the dominant brand in that space.

Do you need a license to operate GMRS?

Yes and no.

You can run a low power handheld without a license. To run the high power radios you do.

Pick up a 2 pack handhelds from some place like Amazon and it will be enough to get you started.

I have found that EVERY handheld CB radio I tried has the same problem. As soon as you can't see the vehicle you are trying to talk to, the radio cannot reach them either. The range on these things must be only about a hundred yards or so. If you connect an external antenna to them it helps - as does having a metal roof for a ground plane. On a Jeep it has to go on the hood, not the best location.

GMRS or FRS handheld radios get out much better.

I guess mounting a CB under the dash was a waste... I'll look into the GMRS.

CB is still useful. And will be for a while. But GMRS will become more popular in the years to come.
Gotcha... I guess you can never have enough communications... haha.
