I like to keep it simple s_____ KISS, functional, practical, and cheap.
So, I built a prototype last Sunday and added a little paint and paste wax throughout the week. A rear cargo area slide-out (pull-out) tray/table, with a hinged top.
I'll add more information later, but...free scrap lumber (with the exception of a sanded piece of plywood for the tray/table) and paint, with counter-sunk holes where the original tie-down bolts are to hold in place. Scrap pallet boards with ~3/4" grooves routed through the center, which allowed the sanded/finished 3/4 plywood top to fit perfectly (no mechanical slides needed).
It's not aluminum, nor as pretty as the other's guys will be coming out within a year or so... but fits my needs well.
I have two large Golden Retrievers, one with old hips so it's a challenge for him to travel. I've had a two-inch pad in the back for him, and now the rear cargo area is flat (when the rear seats are down). When the seats are not laid down, the cargo platform is hardly noticed.
