Just throwing this out there, I had a '07 JK that I loved, drove it for 15 years before I got a '21 Hydro Blue JLUR, V6, manual, hard top. I love it so far, the manual has slowly gotten smoother over 3k miles and it's much more comfortable and fun to drive than my JK. I went back to a manual for simplicity and because I missed driving one (the '07 JK was the only auto I've ever had). I've added Armorlite and Bartact to the JL, and I use it for really two things because I work from home:

1. Driving roughly 25 miles R/T to the beach to surf/kite/foil, whatever.
2. Trips - the JK was not exactly trustworthy on long trips (it had issues towards the end, to be expected with 190k of tough miles on it). So, my trips are mostly the surf variety (OBX, Florida) or hiking/off roading and sleeping in the back on a DeepSleep mattress.

So, while prices are high for resale and I got a great deal on mine from Gupton, I'm just pondering a 4xe. I've had a quick test drive in one and really liked it.

Here's some parameters:

1. Cost - I'm obviously not trying to pay a huge delta to get a 4xe. I'd rather get the tax savings upfront, and somehow work a lease so that it doesn't cost a fortune when I go to buy it after the shortest lease time possible.
2. Use - I think it would be on all-electric 90% of the time, it's garage kept, and basically just making trips to the beach and errands within 20 miles. My kwh is 13 cents (SC). This is one reason why the 4xe would be considered.
3. Long term Reliability - this is my main concern, the whole shutting off in the middle of the woods or on a trip is the exact opposite of why I bought the '21 JL and sold my JK
4. Off-road - I do take it off road a decent bit, but I have no plans to go larger than 33" on tires or any additional major upgrades, if I can't get to wherever I'm going with a stock Rubicon, then........oh well.
5. Sleeping (this is the biggest obstacle I see right now other than additional cost) - the Deepsleep works perfect in the JL, any options for the 4xe since the seats don't lay flat.

The seats laying flat is another issue with loading boards, etc. but not a huge one. A platform of some sort won't work because I'm going to have the back end full with boards, etc. This may be a bird in the hand type situation, and maybe I revisit the 4xe in 4 or 5 years.......thoughts?

Other than the fact that Florida doesn’t really get surf-able waves (California’s Mavericks and pipes are real waves, lol) I like my 4xe so far.
I’ve had a TJ, JK, and an ā€˜18 Sport S Unlimited, and can honestly say the 4xe Rubicon is my favorite so far.

Like you, I work from home and mainly run errands around town so I’m 100% electric most days. I do travel about 100 miles r/t once per week, but my fuel usage and overall mileage are REALLY good.

I haven’t experienced any of the issues others have with their 4xe’s and while the rear seat not folding flat takes a little getting used to, it’s by no means a deal killer for me.

Hope this helps!

Learn to foil - you will love Florida EC waves. The mushier and slower the better, ha. The rear seat solution may be the one determining factor, well that and the overall cost of ownership.

Thanks!

I love our 1st 4xe. Sold an F250 and an Audi S4 when it arrived. Now, I have another on order. We do 90% electric. We are going to get a TINY travel trailer, like the new Winnebago Hike 100, to do all the stuff my F250 did. We leased and took advantage of the 7500 rebate. Now, you can get them for 10.25% off MSRP too.

I stuffed boards into a jk and jku for years and worked ok. But now with the 4xe, when they say do not fold flat they mean it. I think i'd only be able to fit my 5'6 foamie in it. But thats ok, we got a hardtop for that reason. Ive never kite boarded so im not sure how much room the kites take up but you will need to really look at how much room you will have with the seats down.

Yeah, the percentage off invoice is a given, I'll go through one of the dealers on here, probably Gupton again to be honest. It's still looking like roughly $14k before the tax credit differential.

Yeah. that's a concern, the foil sits in the cargo area, and I usually stack kiteboards with the rear seat down (they are mostly 5'9" and below - think small directionals, I don't really ride a twintip anymore), and the bigger boards up top (foil, SUP, etc.). When I go to sleep, everything goes up top. The issue would be sleeping inside with that rear seat.

I really want to get into it. Every time I see someone kite surfing it looks like a blast!

If you’re anything like me, I’d bet you’re going to miss the manual. I’d be in a 4xe right now if I didn’t have to choose between a different engine option that came with a manual. But if that’s not as important to you as it is for me, then I’d get the 4xe.
