I have been looking into these Witech scanners on ebay and wondered if any of these standalones would work with a JL. It seems like its too new but Im not sure. I bought a bluedriver but it doesnt give me enough details. Wondering if my only choice is to get a subscription from the online service for DIY repairs.

I don't know that particular scanner/reader, but the OBDII port is "locked" from the factory and needs to be bypassed for scanners/readers to work.

I have the TazerJL, but use it for programming(at this time it can only clear CEL, it cannot read codes). I also have a cheap Bluetooth OBDII reader/scanner from Amazon.

This only works because the Tazer JL comes w/ a bypass.
I don't know of any bypasses that are sold separately or come with just a reader/scanner. Z Automotive (Tazer) sells a bypass module for the Cherokee separately. I don't think they sell it separately for the JL(U) or that it is compatible.
But, truth be told, the TazerJL is amazing as a programmer.

The flashcal JL reads and clears codes. Pretty much everything the tazar does. It doesn't do the parade lights though. And it was 225.00. Its made by superchips, they have been around for awhile.

This calibrates speedo and reads codes and can clear them. It plugs into a terminal block behind the glove box instead of OBDII port and the cable is not as shown in the picture. It has to have the code read/clear feature as you need to have no codes before doing the speedo cal. https://www.roughcountry.com/speedometer-calibrator-90019a.html

It doesn't much for the money.
Can't argue that. Flash cal and Tazer even more. Its the cheapest option to get and clear codes without plugging into the OBDii port though.

Most manufacturers have added OBDII and cellular (Uconnect for FCA) firewalls on very late models. This is what the Security Gateway Module (SGW) in the Wrangler JL does.

There were some highly publicized vehicle malicious hacking demonstrations published in the media (mostly on Jeeps) in recent years that was the wake-up call for the auto industry. For example: https://www.wired.com/2016/08/jeep-hackers-return-high-speed-steering-acceleration-hacks/

They won't touch it. You can buy an SGW bypass module alone from Z-Auto for about 70 bucks.
