I finally installed in cab winch controls. I wanted to do this years ago on my TJ but never got around to it. A big thanks to @tonygiotta for his thread.

I used a pre-wired switch panel from 12volt guy And installed it in the cigarette lighter location. I wired the switch panel to the winch remote wires so I have the option of using the remote or the switch. I ran the wiring from the winch up the drivers side engine bay through a grommet

panel with lighter removed

Adding switch panel to the accessory panel (don’t mind the old breezer covers)

Will I use this often? Absolutely not. But I haven’t used the cigarette lighter since I bought the Jeep. I wheel with good buddies and we pull winch lines for each other so it should work out well for my needs, should they arise. And it’s much more convenient than getting out in the mud or snow to hook up a remote.

cheers

I like this mod. It has cool factor and gives some element of practical protection from elements and from injury in the event something breaks during the pull. However, why not just sit in the driver seat and use the winch’s remote, either wired or wireless?

Sweet, glad you were able to put the info to good use! Good spot for the controls too given you’re willing to sacrifice the 12V outlet.

For me, it’s twofold. First, I’m not a big fan of wireless remotes, especially for something like a winch where a dead remote battery or poor wireless connection could lead to a non-functioning and/or unreliable winch in what is likely an already precarious situation. Second, in-cab controls look clean and are just always there and ready. No digging the wired remote out of a storage cubby to hook it up, no wires running through a partially opened window, no control cable draped along the side of the Jeep rubbing on the paint. It’s by no means necessary, but when factoring in the other reasons you already mentioned, it was worth the time and effort for me.

cool factor, and I dislike the remote. I still have the option to use , corded or cordless. And it’s something different.

There really isn’t any significant gain other than not having to screw around with the remote

I think it was this one

plus i still have the option of reinstalling the 12v plug into a different location. I’m still thinking on this, because between the media panel usb and the console usb I haven’t needed it.
Since I have the winch control wiring on quick disconnects spliced into the 12v wiring it would rake about 5 minutes to swap my current panel back to a stock one, with a working 12v plug in
