Went to Hawaii this past week... Got lucky.

Rental was a new Willys XR with 500 miles and Sky One Touch. Really nice. Underestimated how much I would like the SOT. Drove all over Maui, a ton of Jeeps here, mostly 4xe. I assume because of the better financing. Did not see another XR the whole week!

Nice! My wife and I were there 15 years ago for our honeymoon. We had a silver Sport JKU for our rental. Maui is a really cool island with all its little microclimates.

Many folks have underestimated the SOT. In fact, many puff their chests out and proudly state “I would NEVER own one,” in spite of having no experience with the SOT.

Then one day they get a rental, and when they push that magical button for the SOT, heavenly light suddenly bathes them and angels start singing in their heads.

I too have been to Hawaii, while on a military exercise. It’s a beautiful place! It reminds me of Florida, but with mountains and a far, far, far higher cost of living.

Next time consider popping over to Lanai and renting Jeeps for off-roading. We did that as a group of 8 and loved it. You can head down slick trails like this to the beach. 4x4 is mandatory. Kiting and snorkelling were excellent as expected. Definitely worth it to go there. Stays empty.

If travelling to Waikiki - the yacht club is very nice and super chill. Would recommend to go there for drinks vs the hustle and bustle outside with all the tourists.

I was there in '08. Rented a JK for the week. The first vehicle I see leaving the airport property was an F250 regular cab flatbed, with a couple cowboys in it, pulling a 2 horse trailer. Felt like I never left home.

There was plenty of grassland, mesquite trees (they have another name for them), and barbed wire fences in the Upcountry region.

The second picture you posted looks like it could be from 150-200 miles west of here. It surprised me how they had a dry side and a wet side to the islands. Desert and rain forest so close to each other.

I live here on Maui, best weather on the planet. People are generally pretty chill. There are so many rental Jeeps that the Jeep wave is not a thing. It is great living here if you do it carefully to deal with the cost of living. Having said that, there are several mainland areas that have gotten pretty close to us. I like not having to go over 45mph unless I want to, most speed limits are that or less except for a few short stretches on a few routes.

Yes, I did notice that no one waves and there were ZERO ducks! It was refreshing actually.

My daughter and son-in-law live on Oahu. We visit as often as we can as there is always a spare room available.

I usually rent a Jeep. What I find is that there are no ducks in rental Jeeps (who is going to bring them on vacation), and most of the Jeeps on the island are rentals. Want to find a resident? Look for the older Jeeps. Imported vehicles (all of them) are expensive, so people keep them and maintain them.

I still wave to fellow Jeepers, no matter where we are..because I have been waving to fellow Jeepers since the 1970's....

We just happen to be in the OBX, right now and there are very few Jeep people who wave, but most have ducks.....

We were in Maui a few years back, didn't have a fun rental - but the vibes of Maui compared to the other islands is unbeatable. Everything is so laid back and chill. Oahu reminded me of downtown St. Louis when you first fly in..
