Siri and Amazon Echo require devices to be on a network and a have access to the Internet. The vehicles do have voice control for climate phone etc. are there āMcgyverā opportunities... hmmmm
I just proposed this in another thread, that Amazon should make thier app compatible with Android Auto. Then you could have Alexa control through the system, using your phones internet connection, etc.
Ford, Volkswagen, BMW and Toyota have all announced plans to integrate Alexa into their infotainment systems. Hopefully Jeep in looking into this as well.
Jeep: Oil Life at 10%
Me: Alexa, order my Jeep Oil Change Kit.
Alexa: OK. Your order is placed.
A relay like this should work... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071GCDGQB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_jZb8BbK6BJ5Q8
It's wired somewhat similarly to a standard 12V relay, but it's WiFi capable and compatible with Alexa. There are probably others like it that may work better, but I bought this a while back for a different project (not automotive but 12V based) and it works fine and is inexpensive ($10).
Just need that and a Dot, then of course a WiFi network in your Jeep. Could use the one in the Infotainment system (if equipped), or personal hotspot on your smartphone.
There's a little more to it all of course, but I don't even have my JL or a wiring diagram for it yet or maybe I'd be more help.
In the end, you should be able to say something like "Alexa turn on the lightbar" to turn on your six lighting.
People above have raised the excellent and necessary logistical points to getting such voice activated internet technology to work.
I'd like to focus not simply on the dangers in depleting my bank account as such an interface might make it too easy for me to order gear I think might be useful as I drive my rig, but the things I might ask of Alexa, or some other interface.
"Alexa, make FCA provide Wrangler purchasers with a $20K rebate check to buy all the gear the want."
"Alexa, what nearby beach has the nicest Bikinis, and I don't mean the newest Wrangler color?"
"Alexa, can you make the ride in the back passenger's seat extra bumpy for my mother-in-law."
"Alexa, my mother-in-law is coming. Make the retractable side steps go up and down in random fashion."
"Alexa, take 20% off all aftermarket products for the JL Wrangler."
ā¦ā¦.. feel free to add your own.
Not that Alexa can do all these things, rather on its best day merely understand these statements, but this is far too much power for one man to have!
This is redundant to a degree - android auto lets you use ok google for voice commands and apple car play lets you use siri, both of which are much better than the factory system (which is ok) and not far behind alexa.
I have alexa at home but it's not really any more advanced than google or siri other than some of it's skills - and i'm not sure I need to check my bank balance or route music to be played on my home stereo while i'm driving.
In order to get control of the vehicle's devices, you'd need alexa (or google or siri) to have access to the car's can bus to do any control of the car functions which would require fca to allow it and integrate it. This would be kind of scary given security concerns, don't think it's going to happen for any of them anytime soon.
Excellent point @bobzdar. The fly in the ointment or paradox here comes in the fact that true control of the rig necessitates the very access to the CAN bus systems that FCA potentially voids warranties over others accessing.
