I just want to enjoy my retirement with my ipad sitting by the water listening or watching stuff.
I don't have a phone so the wifi will at least enable me to text if I need too with the wifi only Ipad.
OK, I ask because I set up a small media server in my Jeep for my kids when we go on road trips. I loaded a bunch of videos and music on it for them. I didn't want to use a hotspot because who knows how much data they would burn through.

Another option is to get an ipad with cell capabilities. You could probably sell what you have and get some money back from it. You can also get a usb battery pack for the ipad for extended watching. The other nice thing about the cell ipad is that you get a gps with it too, which could be helpful for navigation and off road apps like that.

I personally am not interested in jeep (or car) wifi hotspots because I think you're paying for a service where you're limited, instead of using a hotspot or a cell enabled device.

Speaking of which, you can also buy a cellular portable hotspot. I'm pretty sure you can run those off a battery pack as well.

If the service comes from AT&T and you're active or former military you could try asking for a discount on it at least.
