I have a Ipad that only has wifi capabilities not cellular so I signed up for the Wifi @ twenty bucks a month.
Any ideas on how to enjoy this feature for a extended period without draining my battery if I want to use this w/o the engine running ? And possibly me not being in the Jeep in some instances?

Yeah, I wouldn’t give Sirius Guardian any of my money. The lot is a bunch of qualified thieves.

Good luck.

I would do a phone hotspot too, but maybe there's a reason the OP wants to use his Jeep to do this.

I would *guess* that the AP uses a very small amount of electricity from the battery. It may be wise to carry a jump pack around for a bit until you get the feel for how long you can use it. This then also leads into the controversial question on how to jump a dead battery in a JL. :D

I'm curious about this too. Would the vehicle have a improved reception compared to a cell phone making the $20 worth it?

Depends on if the OP got the EMI-prone version wrangler or not. Would also need to compare carrier coverage maps together.

I did the trial, and I doubt it. It's essentially the same as a phone hotspot, using AT&T's cellular service. So it would depend on how good AT&T coverage is in your area. Where I am, Verizon has better coverage. For the trial, I set it up, tried it out with my tablet (also wifi only) for about an hour while waiting on my daughter's volleyball practice to end, and then never used it again during the trial. Compared to my phone's Verizon hot spot, it was noticeably slower, but it was fast enough for email, browsing internet, and simple games. Video is where I noticed the biggest difference though. The video streaming worked, but the resolution kept dropping which tells me that the speed wasn't as good and not able to keep up at higher resolutions.

That was just one try, sitting in one spot, though, so YMMV.

I hear you man, I switched from Verizon to ATT, and I have regret it ever since.

Cancel the plan and turn your phone into a hotspot, carry a battery pack for when your devices need a charge and you're away from an outlet.
I’m the rarest of animal, I don’t have a cell phone. I’m free. ?

That is totally location dependent, I've had AT&T, Verizon, TMobile, and Sprint they're all great in some areas and terribad in others. I would stick with AT&T or Verizon and a mobile hotspot over the limited use vehicle option. We had it in our Denali and while nice on the road, it was really just throwing money away compared to a pocket portable hotspot.

The WiFi service is through ATT. I use it all the time because my Jeep is my office. However, I have noticed it will only work with the key on or the engine running. Therefore, if you wanted to use it while outside the Jeep you'd need to leave it in the ACC or Run position and monitor your battery. Maybe you could put a trickle charger on the battery if you plan to use it for extended periods

If you're absolutely wanting to go the vehicle hotspot route, and depending on your desired duration of use, maybe a genesis dual battery system with a solar hood panel trickle charging it. I don't know what the efficiency of the panels are.

I'm just being nosey, but are you needing the hotspot for? Maybe we can recommend something easier and better for your needs.

I just want to enjoy my retirement with my ipad sitting by the water listening or watching stuff.
I don't have a phone so the wifi will at least enable me to text if I need too with the wifi only Ipad.

Cell phone is Verizon and Jeep uses ATT so I can make a call using cell coverage or WIFI call. Pay a year in advance saves 40 bucks.
