Shopping for a JL
Been looking for a JL for quite some time. It will be my first Jeep. Initially I had opted to look for a decent lease on a Sahara or an optioned up Sport S just to keep a payment in a fairly reasonable portion of my monthly budget. (~500/mo).

So I was on autotrader and I saw some JL's are hitting the used market and this caught my eye. The specs hit a lot of what I am looking for and the price allows me to finance (~albeit 84 mos) at a similar payment to a lease.

2018 Jeep Wrangler Sahara JL
Price: $37,790
Mileage: 16,084

It was bought at Manheim auction (I was able to track down some auction pics on badvin.org of it before it was cleaned up, quite dirty). Price seems fair, auction MMR value was $34,900. (Amazing what you find on the internet these days.) Carfax says it was a corporate fleet vehicle and was manufacturer owned, perhaps a FCA company car? I have seen some people say that this category can be used to mask a lemon too, but I would hope that is no the case here.

Never heard of the dealer (Eastern Motors) but they seem to have quite a following in the DC area related to an obnoxious commercial. They also seem to cater to less than great credit clients. I have 800+ credit and would come with a check from my credit union and not finance through them. Not willing to do business with them if consensus is to avoid.

Sorry for the book, hopeful to join you all as a JL owner in the not so distance future.

$38k for a 2018 with 16k miles? Ooof. Even if the sticker is $48k, it’s not like you’d be paying that when so many people are getting upwards of 8% off invoice, probably more now on leftover new models.

Jeeps are one of those vehicles where, unless you’re buying really used because your budget is only $20-25, it only makes sense to buy new because of the outstanding resale value they hold.

Does not look like a great deal to me. If you shop around you should be able to get a brand new 2018 with same MSRP for another 2-3 K. Plus, you may not really want all the 10K in options that this vehicle has, in which case it is a terrible deal.

Thanks, I actually found a few options which I had not come across in earlier searches. I am a day trip to Criswell or Koons, should I just go that route?

Without speaking to this particular vehicle or the dealership, I personally don't hate the Sahara you found. As a point of comparison, I bought a Sport S with Tech, Tow, Anti-Spin, and Premium Soft Top for only 2 grand less. Buying new, you'll be priced out of Leather, LED, and an Automatic at your price point.

To me, it's figuring out what you need and what you're willing to budge on.

In general it is difficult to get deals on wranglers in Colorado, but there are brand new 2018 Sahara's with a listed sale price of 40K before any negotiation.

I think it comes down to, if you really want all the options on the used one and if the extra $3 K or so matters that much to you. If you really like how the Sahara is optioned, it is not a terrible deal.

I tend to agree, if the gap is only $3-4k then I think I would avoid starting with 16K unknown miles. I am looking in to what a new factory build would cost and figure out what I am willing to compromise on. I appreciate the responses. Thanks.
