So, just installed a Metalcloak front diff cover and skid. In the process when I pulled the magnetic drain plug I found spiral or coiled metal shavings. Almost looks a bit like a Brillo pad. 2019 JLUR with 9025 miles....ran it in 4wd once so far. Normal?

Looks like machining chips from the manufacturing process that weren’t cleaned out. Wish there was something in the pictures for size reference.

My son the Machinists agrees that is chips from machining operations on the housing.

Hopefully they stayed in the bottom of the housing. If not the damage is already done.

As others have said--not normal. It may have been the last axle of the shift and it was not cleaned out and was just assembled. Good thing the magnetic drain plug caught it. 1.5QTs of oil is cheap and if it were mine I would change it again in a few thousand miles (after running 4x4 a few times).

When you had the cover off to replace did you spray out the pumpkin to get all that out?

I did not. I stuck my fingers in and felt around. I’m inclined to just take it to Jeep and let them do it at this point. Thoughts?

with an aftermarket cover YMMV. Give it a shot worst they can do is tell you it's your fault
