Looking to put a rack on my 2 door for the cargo space with camping. Wanting one of the frame types, not the mount on the hard top ones. Only really finding the Gobi and the Garvin Adventure or Expedition racks. Are those the only ones? Are any of them any good? Is the Gobi really worth that much more money compared to the Garvin?

I don't have any experience with Garvin or Expedition racks, bu I've got a Gobi on my 2 door JLR soft top and it is very well made. I don't have any regrets, but it is expensive...especially when you tack on the cost of the accessories. The big con is how long it takes them to fulfill an order since they are made to order. Mine took 6 months.

Yeah it sounds like the Gobi rack is the only one that's currently available for softop JLs... I am looking for one as well and yeah, the only thing keeping me back is the $2k price point.

I thought about getting a rooftop tent, but they are heavy and on a 2 door, they would take up virtually all the space on the Gobi rack. My usual roof load for camping is my ground tent, between 2 and 4 Rotopax (2 gallon), a long storage box (table, chairs, etc.), and an awning. Probably 150 lbs. worth of stuff...rock solid.

That's pretty awesome! Yeah I guess that's true. I haven't really even checked how much some of those tents weigh.

the Garvin is available for the soft tops as well. And less cash than the Gobi as well as getting it in 2 weeks instead of 3 months

Looks pretty cool and 2 week lead times is pretty awesome. There are some thing you might want to consider: There is only a $400 difference between the Gobi and Garvin. When you factor in tax and freight, which Gobi bakes into the cost, it's only a $200 difference for the standard rack. Plus, some of things that come standard on the Gobi are optional on the Garvin... wind deflector, cross bars, and ladder.

Anyone know weight of the Gobi? Is it aluminum or steel up top?

Garvin is based in San Diego so run by and see if you can make a deal.
