Usually you need to be moving a little bit to help the gears mesh. So rolling a bit forward or backward is okay.

good to know. I recently had a situation where I lost momentum in 4H and had to back out. would have made it easier had I known.

I don’t know if this is an old wives tale or what but when I got my Jeep I found shifting out of 2H and into 4H or 4K was really still. I spent some time making the shifts and it seems to go a lot easier now…

Not an old wives' tale. Jeeps have a break-in period. But it's not for the engine, it's for the drivetrain. The drivetrain of new Jeeps is tight, it loosens up and the transfer case gets easier to shift. Old Jeeps are as loose as a $5 whore.
