I had two D-rings on a rear bumper I built for my JK and only finger tightened them. About 6-8 months later, they were gone - must have fallen off driving down the road. Lesson learned the hard way. I got a new pair and put them on with Loctite blue. Have been on for years now with no issue.

I like @Highonlyfe & @RussJeep1 's zip-tie idea...I hadn't thought of it. With the thread lock, I tighten with pliers but it ain't theft-proof. Sure, a zip-tie could be clipped, but keeping them off until needed solves all concerns, but I'll confess to liking the look with the nipple rings on. I have no shame & nothing to hide! This probably won't help getting the man card reinstated.

Do any of the bolts that come with these D-Rings come with a cotter pin hole in the threaded end? Seems like an easy thing to do.

This is where they belong, I sure hope my family or anyone else is not injured from a shackle bouncing down the highway that came loose.

This is not a topic where I cut my teeth, so if my comments appear ignorant I apologize in advance.

Many of the shackles I've seen, like in @Armycop 's post above featuring a hole in the pin.

Couldn't you, say, put a twisty tie through this pin and wrap each loose end of the twisty tie around the rest of the shackle?...or would the same vibrations doom the twist tie's wrap, and then ultimately the pin's?

Couldn't someone design a shackle with a slightly longer pin around which you tie a nylon nut around the threaded tip...as much as nylon nuts give up grip with repeated use.

Man---entropy's a bummer!
Pretty sure the intent of the hole is for a safety wire to prevent the shackle from loosing. So you're not crazy.
