That's a great point, and honestly one of the things that I think about the most with the axles is how many shots the skids have taken for the yokes.

Now you've got me thinking more about it. I might just do both again on this Jeep. Long term plan is to get some UD60's under it, but it has to run in the mean time. We'll see.

Followed a Jeep recently with a very experienced driver up John Bull on 40s with UD60s. There are spots you’re simply not going over or around boulders. I watched his diffs hit several times In the first uphill section. With my inexperience, all my skids and rear bumper took a beating. I wont give up my skids anytime soon.

I'd hold off on axles for a bit, Eaton's talking about a next-gen E-locker to be announced at SEMA this year ( Eaton Launches New Aftermarket Differentials ) for the D60s. Current D60 models have some issues I've seen with failures (Ali Mansour who does off road stuff for Driving Line, and is based out of NC, has had like 2 or 3 grenade on him just wheeling Uwharrie and Windrock, nothing crazy). IMO, wait for the new Eatons, and consider another axle builder like ECGS or Dynatrac or Fusion who might get them in the pipeline faster.

Oh no no no no no, we're not doing axles now. Or next year. Or in 2 years. MAYBE 5 years? I don't know yet. When I do move to tons, I want something plug and play. Something that works like factory. I'll save up and spend more money for that, I don't care. I've had my fill of creative solutions and conversions. I just want shit to work correctly the first time, now.

Not to get too off-topic, but I'm taking a half step back with this build. I played a little too rough with my orange one, which is part of the reason it was so... problematic, and aged so fast. Keeping my Green 392 as stock XR as I can for now. Goal is to pay it off early. Still not sure if I'm going to get ambitious and bolt my 37's on for off road stuff, or sell them and run the "35's". This reminds me I need to get a build thread up. I've been slacking on the forum but life is busy.

Skids and covers serve different purposes, I went with the front and rear diff skids, along with the shock skids and a hitch skid,,, as you can see in the pictures, my diff skids provide protection for the covers and you can see they’ve already protected my diffs many times, I’ve hit the shock skids more than the diffs, and my hitch skid rides underneath my spare and not only act as a skid, but a step and a recovery point and lets me slide off rocks instead of having the rock hit my spare and bust out my back window,,,

To be fair those 60s are way bigger than the 44 pumpkins too which doenst help.

They're all about the same level of plug and play for a new crate axle (all use ARB or Eatons for lockers, all use JL-appropriate bracketry, etc.). Dana might have a leg up on like e-brake stuff or steering, but pretty sure that wouldn't be too intense to figure out with any of the others either.

But yeah, lemme know how staying stock ends up going...

I'd be curious to know the difference in clearance between a D60 with just a diff cover on 40s and a D44 with a skid on 37s. I feel like the 44 with skids might be close but still higher up.

Oh for sure, but I view it like lift height. There's a point of diminishing returns and there's a point where it's meaningful. Probably varies person to person with where and how they wheel, but either way, data is interesting.

Also don’t forget if you wheel the BOH trails in Big Bear you will need both lockers on the entire time or you don‘t belong there. I can’t find that thread now. Maybe @yokramer remembers. Nevermind someone new accidentally doing a BOH gatekeeper in 4hi no lockers without a problem because she was nervous and forgot.

I mean you can do quite a bit in 4H provided you have a high enough tolerance for mechanical abuse

The eventual plan is probably a build similar to the Rock Krawler Hydro blue 392, but not for a few years. Mostly Because I had to replace a Jeep earlier than scheduled by 2 years and so things didn't go exactly as I had planned, i had to adjust a bit. That said, i could be convinced of a long arm once its on tons. I loved the long arm on my TJ.
