Diff fluid change and P0607 code?

Just about hitting 20k on the wrangler so I decided to do a diff fluid swap.

Drained both the front and rear diff and topped off with Royal Purple 75w90. Thought it was pretty straight forward but when I started up the wrangler, I got an check engine light.

Used a cheap OBD2 reader and got a P0607 error code. A quick google says it’s related to PCM/ECM.

I guess technically it couldjust be coincidental timing, but it seems pretty related. Any ideas why? Thanks in advance!

You should still be within the 3/36 so you have options.

1. Clear code and keep driving.

2. Check your fuses and if no luck take to a dealer and have them check it. They may refer to my first option.

as long as you didnt bump any wires or anything while under there, the jeep doesnt know what type of lube you put in. However if the lube you used did not meet the conditoins to properly cool the dif then yea it could burn up a sensor in there if it has one.

Yeah, I was trying to clear it so I could keep driving, but for some reason it won't clear. Might be more my OBD2 device more than anything else.

That said, the oil I used is above spec, topped off, and it was immediately upon start, so it wouldn't have even had a chance to burn anything or trigger a sensor, you know?

Back to the drawing board. Appreciate the insight! :)

Yea thats a bummer, I'm guessin' you checked the fuses. I had a weird code not to long ago about the evap recovery system. Just cleared it and kept driving, hasn't been back. And i couldnt tell ya what my scan tool is but it did take 3 tries to clear my code. FWIW

No way.... did your changing diff fluid, front and rear cause a CEL to be thrown.

OBD2 Code P0607 Jeep definition:
This code basically means that the programming of the PCM/ECM (powertrain/engine control module) has failed. This can be a more serious code and may also be refered to as “ECM Internal Circuit Malfunction”.

Possible causes of OBD code P0607 Jeep
A P0607 Jeep could be caused by one or more of the following: Loose ground terminal on PCM/ECM Dead or defective (12V main) battery An open or short in the power or ground circuit Loose or corroded battery terminals Failed PCM/ECM.

Yes, or connector on Neg. side of Main battery is loose.... or another ground is loose.

For sure, no way would anything you do or touch during a Diff fluid change would cause a CEL to be thrown when you start the JKL up. Just a coincidence the CEL was thrown at diff fluid change time..

IF ... if you end up taking your JL to the stealership to have this CEL remedied (you are under warranty) do not tell them that you changed the diff fluids and started the JL and the CEL was on..

Just tell the Service Writer you started up the JL and the CEL came on.... and tell them nothing else..

It would be just like some dumb ass person at the stealership to say the diff fluid change caused the issue and then have them try/want you to pay for the CEL thing...

Unless you open/run your mouth the dealer / their employees will not know you changed diff fluid... and again your doing that is not relevant anyways...

As mentioned earlier, no way can / will a diff fluid change cause a CEL to be thrown... You could have pissed in the diff case(s) or left them dry or whatever and when you started up the JL a CEL would not have been thrown...

Appreciate the advice! I’m still new to the game, but I was also pretty sure there was no way they were related.

I’m not in a position right now to double check the batt and fuses, but I’ll definitely do that before going to the dealership. And believe me, I won’t be mentioning changing diff fluid!!
