I was at a stop light and my Jeep turned off (auto stop function) and didn’t start back up. I received an error on the screen that said “service power steering”. A tow truck had to come pick it up. We also had to manually engage neutral since the shifter would not move to get it loaded on the flatbed. Hopefully this isn’t a huge deal. What a nightmare

Wait what the shifter locked up also? How does a mechanical shifter get locked up from a power steering error?

Sounds like it may have been a battery/power related issue. IF battery goes dead, a bad ground, etc. and then you cannot get out of park and you need to use the tether release as shown in pics below to release/move shift lever out of P.

I hope the issue is minor. Who knows. The dealer just called me and the Jeep won’t even boot up, the dealer said their reader can’t even read the Wranger.

You’re right on the teather, someone needs to stay in the vehicle to keep it pulled up though

Wouldn't it be simpler to just put the transfer case in neutral or would that be problematic in this situation?

Well, I'm not sure what the manufacture is thinking ... Maybe they want automatic transmission in N before you do place the transfer case in N and then the Automatic transmission is placed back into park but they never explain this..

I myself know, if you are going to flat tow or push the JL/JLU you would do the following:
  • The transfer case must be shifted into Neutral (N),
  • The automatic transmission must be in Park / the manual transmission must be in a forward gear (Not in neutral).
I also know that you should NEVER dolly tow a Jl/JLU or tow it with only one set of wheels on the ground (front or rear). Do this and you will undoubtedly cause transmission and/or transfer case damage.

You only choice is to flat tow (means all 4 wheels on the ground) following the specific instructions I mentioned above, or to flat bed the vehicle.
