Hey guys, just thought I would post some pics on a DIY storage box for the tailgate that I built. Have to give credit to a fellow member for his write-up and all the info he posted on his setup. I was originally going to do it the way he did but found the perfect box and decided to go a slight different route. Was planning on using ammo cans but after a shopping trip to Princess Auto (Canadian version of harbour freight), I found a trailer storage box that was the perfect size, was waterproof and had a locking lid. Used a flat piece of steel, a cylindrical rubber boat roller that was cut to required lengths, and some nuts and bolts. Happy with the way it turned out and now gives us storage for all our recovery gear so we have easy access to it. For any information about the nuts and bolts used, I highly recommend the thread by another user that did this with ammo cans. Wish I could remember his username to credit him.

Perfect. Thanks for linking the original post and user. Have a hard time doing tags and links like that on my phone. Technology is not my strong point. Couldn’t have done this without all his useful information.
No prob. I really like both solutions but yours looks a little cleaner for my own application. You've got me thinking about it now. I am following both threads for the record. The main advantages for the ammo cans (in my opinion) is they keep the smelly stink of my trail tools sealed in. I may do a mix of this and the ammo cans though. still trying to plan things out. I'm looking to keep the cargo area open because in addition to all the off roading activities and outdoor adventures i have planned with my family, I also haul around my guitar rig. That cargo space is valuable!

The top of the box is 22” x 10” (lid) and the bottom of the box is 20” x 8”.
There is a rubber seal on the box so it should keep the smell pretty well contained too. I’ll attach some pics of the seal as well as the lock and the cover for it. Won’t seal as well as an ammo box but shouldn’t be too bad for smell.

Here’s a link for the box on princess auto. I bought it on sale a month or so ago but if you price it compared to 2 ammo boxes, not really much of a difference. Price is Canadian since princess auto is Canadian (not sure where you are from).

Only thing I don’t like is that you cannot remove the key when it is unlocked but I think this may be for the best since it will ensure I lock it every time. I am leaving the key in the small little pocket in the back storage compartment so it is easily accessible at all times but also secure when Jeep is locked. Only thing I still want to do is use wingnuts to attach instead of nuts so that it can easily be removed. Right now I am carrying a 10 mm wrench in it so I can remove it whenever I need to.
