CJLR - Retro inspired JLR Build

All those great 4x4s from the late 60's into the 70s and 80s have exploded. I'm a huge Scout fan and I can't believe what they're going for these days. It's actually cheaper to mod my Rubicon with CJ vibes than to build up an old school ride the way that I'd want to?

Absolutely, I had a Scout and everything on it broke! It would have needed new everything to fix back in the late 80s!

I over geared for sure. The jeep was far more streetable on 4.10's and 38's than it is now on 5.38's. It's in 8th gear by the time you get to 50mph and has nowhere to shift from there. We went from average 17.5mpg to 15...or less. You can forget about cruising 85mph on I5 and keeping up with the flow of traffic, as your pushing 3k rpms and getting 12 mpg in return. It's no quicker 0-60mph than it was before the regear. The only place that it's better is off road, in high range as the 4-1 transfer case didn't need any more gearing than the 4.10's provided. Did it shift between 7th and 8th frequently before? Absolutely, which is what it should do with a double Overdrive 8 speed. 4.88's may of been better than the 4.10's, swinging all the way to 5.38's is 100% not an improvement over the stock gearing.

Well...OK, 5.38 would be 39-40+ tire range. I am running shorter 37's (BFG K02) and I love the improvements that I gained by going to 5.13. For me, 4.88 was not cutting it here in CO, but worked fine at sea level. I have none of the issues that you are describing, but I would not expect to given the difference between 5.13 and 5.38.

Cool build! I too am going for a retro vibe with mine. I looked for some mid-late ‘70’s inspired decals but couldn’t find any that I liked so I went with early ‘70’s style stripes. I plan to make bumpers that look like something from that vintage with KC lights.

You have a 2.0T, I have a 3.6L. 4.88 is "perfect" for that engine and 37"-38" tires and is what I would go with if I had it.

The turbocharger compensates quite a bit at highway speed versus my 3.6L which loses 20% HP/TQ at 7K feet vs. the 2.0T losing far less due to the turbo.

You are correct, I would not have geared that low with a 2.0T.

I understand the half door love. I picked up a set a while back for my TJ Rubicon to run in the summer as well.

Looking forward to the CJLR build. I thought about doing the same with my TJ to resemble my parents' CJ-7, but ultimately decided to go a different way.

I keep vacillating between the Fifteen52 Analog, the CJ Retro, or the Procomp 67. Need to make up my mind eventually. Those Analogs are pricy, though. I may have to check out the Baja Extremes as well.

Love my analogs. Even got flagged down at a stoplight and asked about them. I bought mine before the price went crazy.
