I'm looking to buy some JL Rubicon Take-offs to put on my JL Sahara, but I was told by the dealer that they may not be able to reprogram them to my Jeep since they came off another vehicle, also, they said that there is a replacement valve stem that is about $35/ea that I would need for each wheel...

Can anyone shed some light on this? I think he's trying to sell me their rims/tires, but wanted to double-check...

I believe all wrangler trims use the same tpms part #. Never looked it up, but complete Rubi take-offs with sensors are being put on Sports and Saharas all the time and I've never read about any issues with the vehicle reading the sensors other than it taking some miles driven before the pressures show up on the dash.

I recently got new wheels and tires mounted and installed. I wanted my take-offs to be complete, so I also sprung for fresh new sensors. They had to reprogram the jeep to read the aftermarket sensors.

This information from your dealer is untrue. He’s trying to bilk what he can from you. The TPMS from a Rubicon are not only compatible, but identical. If they’re already mounted in the wheels you’re buying leave them as they are. No need for any replacement valve stems.

I sold my original Rubi wheels with TPMS in them. New owner put them on as is and never had any issues, no programming necessary. I bought wheels and installed a new set of OEM (probably knockoff) TPMS. No programming needed. Worked from the start.

To answer your question OE sensors CANNOT be reprogrammed. Then can be relearned to a different vehicle. Protocol stays the same.

HOWEVER @Chocolate Thunder is 100% accurate. They are the same sensor and protocol. Mount them up and drive. They have auto relearn.

I've done a lot of research &, at least for the sport s JL, the sensor number (OEM manufacturer) is 20398 from Schrader. did research for about 3 days & finally found the best price for these sensors here:
'20 JL Sport TPMS sensors
because I was going with aftermarket wheels, I also picked up some 34000 "service packs" that would upgrade to the aluminum valve stems rather than the rubber ones...again, my research is your gain. Best pricing I could find on the service packs was here:
Aluminum TPMS service kit
I would have liked to get something other than aluminum, perhaps stainless, but I was unable to find any that show compatibility with the 20398 sensors

Just so everyone is aware those are NOT OE Schrader 20398 sensors. Just want to make sure you are not buying thinking you are getting actual Schrader TPMS. Yes they could work and have the correct protocol. They however won't be made by Schrader in Germany. There are tons and tons of fake, knock-off Chinese sensors in the market.

Because I have been in the business for 12 years and buy directly from every major manufacturer directly. I know exactly what a 20398 costs. My team has also purchased TPMS after TPMS off eBay and other sites, broken them open and done comparisons. There are more fake and Chinese made TPMS sensors in the market it is crazy. A 20398, OE Schrader sensor brand new will cost you about $30. Much less then that then you should be leery.
