Thanks guys. Its as I had hoped. Its just that I live in a very urban part of NEO and finding a dirt or gravel stretch of any length is a PIA. Looks like I'll be booking some days at Southington Offroad Park.
No alleys near you?

That's what I do, a slow roll makes for a smooth transition. I still use this method. ?
Hey bud,

I'm in school here too. So when you do the slow roll from 4hi to 4L , are going from drive to neutral and then shifting ? I'm basically were the OP is, I need to stretch the legs so to speak. Plus side, I have plenty of dirt/trails.
Tnx

This is my method and it's been flawless.
Starting at the trail: I find a spot, I put the transmission in neutral, now I'm at a nice slow roll, I shift into 4H and continue right down into 4L, smooth as butter.

If I'm only shifting into 4H I still put the transmission in neutral everytime.

Remember, a slow crawl/roll, not 10 mph.

Ok... thanks. I think my confusion is...
When referring to "NEUTRAL" is that on the P.R.N.D shifter or the 4wd shifter or ?

I put the transmission in neutral every time I shift in or out of 4H & 4L. P R (N) D

When shifting out of 4L I do the same thing. I find a place to have a slow roll, I shift the transmission into neutral then I shift from 4L to 2H. I've never had a hiccup, grind, bump, or clunk. Slow roll = smooth transition.

When I first read the question it brought back memories from high school..."a quiet, quarter-mile straightaway" meant that was THE PLACE to race!! I had a friend with a tricked out 60's Chevy 4x4 that would race in 4wd... he won a lot... hahaha.

OP... you're not drag racing your Jeep are you?! Lol!!!

Thanks. I did read the manual, actually several times and referenced it while attempting to do it.

I was successful, did it several times. Sometimes it was smooth and others it didn't bind n grind , but the shifter was just difficult to move.

I think it was my lack of experience and nervousness at play. It seem each jeep probably has a sweet spot for the directional path of the shifter... kinda like a manual.

Then I realized, I was on pavement and remembered people saying that was a no no... fortunately, I only went straight, at very short intervals.

I will find a trail or similar and continue to practice.

Thanks for your help. ?

I noticed the first 3-4 times shifting into 4H & 4L were definitely tight, I've read this is normal.

You'll be fine bro. ?

When my Jeep was new, I cycled thru the 2hi/4hi 4lo swaybar disconnect once a day in my driveway just to work the mechanism and get it to loosen up. No need for even a 1/4 mile drive.

Get into the habit of shifting your transfer case into 4L when you park. It will loosen up over time and become easier to shift into 4H and 4L. I've did this for many years on my jeeps from day one. In addition a good theft deterrent. At home I do this and when I back up and go forward it's in 4L, then I shift into 2H and drive away. It's amazing how easy it has become to shift into and out of 4wd. Of course this is on a grass lawn. Not pavement. You can always shift into and out of 4L when you park.
