I do have some special bottles. I buy a special bottle for each time one of my son's come home from deployment and get back onto US soil. These two are currently in a holding pattern.

What's the stave recipe for the Select?

I went on a selection trip with a local store and I've been excited about trying different Maker's recipes to compare.

My tastes change so daily sippers vary. I always keep EHT and Eagle Rare around since they are fairly easy to find locally and I like them. Usually have a Blanton's or 5 sitting around but its more for the wow factor. Hancock's Reserve is the same thing just in a not as appealing bottle. For old fashioneds I like Buffalo Trace or Evan Williams BiB. Higher proof Knob Creeks have been impressing me lately. Not really a fan of their standard stuff or the rye. Maker's Private Selects can be pretty good too. They scratch that wheated bourbon itch since Weller is difficult to find here near retail prices. I have to pick that up out of state.

I’ve tried hard to like the Buffalo Trace. Because it’s readily available and inexpensive and I like so much of that distillery’s other more civilized (aged) offerings. I just can’t. They need to age it 4-5 more years and double the price. They couldn’t keep it on the shelves. Consider yourself lucky to have access to Eagle Rare, EH Taylor, and Blanton’s. Around here it’s only available on the secondary market (not this guy) or once in a while if you know somebody or are willing to buy it packaged in multi bottle buys with other stuff. Local store still has some Eagle but it must be purchased with a bottle each of 1792 Full Proof and BiB for $109. I did it once but I’d rather they just sell me the Eagle by itself.

If I start off with BT I'm ok with it, but if I switch over to it after something a bit older, its a different story. I have had a single barrel store pick that was excellent though.

It's funny how bourbon distribution works. I'm from Dallas so I go back to visit once or twice a year. Stuff that I take for granted here is impossible to find there and vise versa. Eagle Rare and EHT have been a bit harder to find here lately, but that means maybe going to two different stores or waiting a few days. Blanton's is not readily available unless you're willing to pay $160+, but I have a couple spots that get it close to retail pretty regularly so I snag one every now and then. Weller? Nope. SR pops up every now and then for $40 but only place to easily get it is $100. I stocked up last time I was in OKC but running low on 107. Still haven't seen a Full Proof in the wild.

Weller Special Reserve is still run of the mill here, you can easily find as much as you care to buy at any store for $25 or less. Like 12 year used to be a few years back before some whiskey review clown said it is essentially Pappy in a different bottle.

As much as I hate the secondary market, sounds like I need to buy a pallet of the green label stuff and bring it to your neck of the woods to resell.

Bottle exchange?

Daily is definitely just a rotation of whatever I am feeling. Found a couple really good Old Fashioned selections though one being Johnny Drumm. Special drinking on occasion would be Blantons but even here in Bourbon country tough to get. Never had Pappy but I am sure I will love it.

You mentioned Johnny Drumm. It’s cheap so I figured I’d give it a try. You owe me $19.20.

Picked up a bottle each of 1792 Full Proof and Booker’s “Granny’s Batch”. Haven’t opened the Bookers’s. The 1792 is alright, not special. Being bottled at 125 proof it has a lot of bold flavors fighting inside your mouth. After half a bottle I can’t decide if that’s good or bad. Guess I’ll have to keep drinking until I can make a determination.
Have you had the Bookers? The way you describe 1792 is sort of what the Bookers reminds me of. I do like to drink Bookers as a shooter or straight sipper out of a shot glass. My friend did not like it. Then again we drank a bottle of it then he proceeded to drink a bunch of beer and tequila shots after at the bar. :CWL:

My favorite bourbon for the passed 7ish years has been GARRISON BROTHERS. I’ve tried many other bourbons to try to top it. But nothing has come close. It’s excellent IMO. Straight, as an old fashioned, wet, dry, with soda, with mineral water...I’ve never been disappointed. Expect to spend $80-100 on it.

For a good middle of the road $45 bottle, can’t go wrong with Basil Hayden’s. Very delicious with some mineral water and a sprinkle of lemon.

For a bottom shelf, get tore up, $20 bottle, I like drinking Sam Houston whiskey.

Lots of good mentions in here but these are my favorites. Never got into Buffalo Trace And Jim Beam sucks.

I haven’t tried Garrison Brothers yet. I’ve tried a lot of the Texas whiskeys since the boom of distilling here and so far I haven’t had any that have blown me away. This discouraged me from dropping that much on GB but I can give it a try.

I saw this when I went to buy Johnny Drum. I wondered if it’s any good. I like ages bourbon, 8 to 12 years seems to be the sweet spot for me.

This isn’t the Sam Houston you’re talking about, is it?

I truly enjoy GB. But I don’t want to end up owing you like @Goin2drt :CWL:

No. This is it:

Well, in some cases you never know if you’ll like it until you try it. I didn’t think I’d love the Old Forester Single Barrel. I bought it because it wasn’t too expensive and I am trying to curry favor with the store owner for future consideration as a “preferred customer” when the allocated stuff comes around. I ended up loving it. So I can use the Johnny Drum as hand sanitizer, and if I don’t like the GB I’ll pour it into an empty Blanton’s bottle and sell it for $200.

@Chocolate Thunder keep me posted if you get it and your thoughts. They’re out of Fredericksburg. I’ve been wanting to go to their distillery.

We went to KY last week, did a barrel pick at New Riff and Wildreness Trail. Got Freddie Johnson to sign a bottle of Eagle Rare plus did a “little” shopping.

You sir, are a hero of the republic. Were you able to score all of those on distillery tours?

Let me know how you like the OF Single Barrel.
