After being parked most the winter, I took the Jeep to the grocery store. I opened the tailgate and raised the rear glass to put the grocery sacks in the back, and as I did so, the rear glass promptly fell as I let go, bashing me in the back of the head. After the requisite amount of swearing, I noticed that the seals in the struts had failed over the winter, dribbled oil down the inside of the tailgate, a failure which left them utterly incapable of performing their function.

My question is-- Has anyone else had to replace these, and did they find a replacement that held the prospect of being higher quality?

None... but it pays well.
IMO struts fail on every vehical. Sudden failure without warning is very rare. Usually sag will show as a sign of needing replaced. Cold weather will be the number 1 area to show up failing struts. Though high heat is the cause. Struts are filled will pressurized gas. Heat will make the pressure higher and eventually bleed past the seals. Usually seals don't fail. But excessive wear from open close in dusty dirty environments may allow wear to be noticable with leakage. Other than that a possible defect in manufacturing has occurred. With that said, engine compartment struts fall into failure more often due to the mentioned above conditions. Why are struts commonly used?... to save time in assembly and be compact in design and function.

The original ones work fine, and are inexpensive. Just replace them, and don't worry for another 4-5 years.
Mine have lasted almost 7 years.
