Backing out to change engine

I have a Gecko 2.0T JLU which should be delivered in the next couple weeks. I have been looking at the diesels more and more while waiting a long time for the Jeep to be built and considering backing out of my order to order a diesel. Am I out of my mind or has anyone else done the same?

When we went to look at Jeeps I was really interested in a diesel. I've driven Cummins Rams for ~15 years and like the sound, the smell, fuel economy, and of course the torque. They didn't have any diesels so we test drove and purchased a 2.0T eTorque which I really like.

Aside from the un-quantifiable benefits, the biggest pro for the diesel in my opinion is the ability to throw 37s on them without regearing (due to the torque). Now the XR package on gas engines comes with 4.56 gears from the factory. Several reviews have shown that the cost of the diesel will offset the gains from mileage for a long time. All that being said... Last month we ordered, and I am waiting impatiently for a JLURD to be delivered.

I'm curious though, why are you considering it? What are you thinking you'll get with the diesel that you won't get with the 2.0T? Was there something you didn't like with the v6 in your signature?

I think mainly considering it because I have never had a diesel so it will be something different. As for the Jeep in my signature I sold it to get a JT, and then sold the JT to come back to a wrangler. Never had any complaints about any of them (aside from the JT barely fitting in the garage).

Well I'm the last person to talk out out of a diesel but I'd sure hate to have to wait twice. I was pleasantly surprised when I got to test drive a diesel JT before ordering my JL. There wasn't an awkward turbo lag coming from a stop. On the other hand it really didn't sound like a diesel to me either. I asked the guy twice to confirm it was a diesel while we were driving and still checked under the hood when we got to the lot. In videos though, under load you can hear the sweet clackity clack of a diesel getting shit done.

If you do go that route, one common gripe about them is dealing with the DEF. It's less of an issue that folks make it out to be though. Just run the DEF to just under half full then you can pour a full jug in without spilling. In all my years with a diesel I've only seen a DEF pump once and never used one.

I have the same exact Jeep as you with 37" tires and the engine/trans didn't notice the difference at all. Regearing isn't necessary with the 8 speed auto.

I have the same exact Jeep as you with 37" tires and the engine/trans didn't notice the difference at all. Regearing isn't necessary with the 8 speed auto.
I don't seen 8th gear very often with the 35s so for me, I'd want to regear to go any bigger.

Longevity and long term reliability. 2.0T down the road out of warranty will be an absolute nightmare.

Longevity and long term reliability. 2.0T down the road out of warranty will be an absolute nightmare.
I think that is speculation not a given.

Comes from experience with higher mileage 2.0T configurations actually. I am in the car business and the number one biggest offender in a late model anything we see is the 2.0T in general. They are throw-aways down the road. Of course they're great when theyre new, most new engines are. Come back in a few years when it's out of warranty. That's when we see them. Almost any diesel is going outlast a 2.0T by a fairly large margin under similar circumstances. Could Jeep have built the miracle 2.0T that will give you similar service as a diesel? Possibly. But doubtful and after what we've seen repeatedly I wouldn't want one beyond the warranty period. Just my experience, hence the post.

I am going to +1 what @slowpoke387 said. I have had a lot of turbos in my life. High mileage is not kind to them and eventually every turbo is going to need a rebuild.

In the case of the 2.0 Jeep, we don't know exactly when that is yet, but I guarantee you its not immune. I understand we are talking about the engine as a whole and not the turbo specifically but I am talking just overall longevity whilst minimizing possibility for failure.

I went with the 3.6 for longevity but f I could do it all over again, I would would be driving the turbo diesel.
