Since installing the front and rear gauges (https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/my-next-project-axle-temperature-gauges.41835/), I have put about 150 miles on the Jeep.

The highest temperature I have seen is 180°F with an ambient air temperature of 70°F. I am not overly concerned about it (yet), but was curious as to what others have seen or if anyone has data to share.

It is a D44, with 4.10 gears and I am running 75W-140.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

I don't have gages on mine, but I work on various gearboxes professionally (that are instrumented). I wouldn't sweat 180 F, if it was running north of 220 F without any particular reason I would be a little concerned.

Thanks for the input! I will continue to monitor.

Heavy tracking and towing can bring temps close to 300°F, 180°F is fine.

I saw between 210°F and 235°F in my Powerstroke while towing and <180°F unloaded and thus my question about a much lighter vehicle hitting 180°F just driving down the road. The Powerstroke was 3.55 gearing and the lower ratio (higher number) you go the more heat that is generated so the 4.10 in the Jeep may account for part of the difference along with the reduction of fluid in the Jeep versus the Powerstroke.

I will continue to monitor as we ease into the hottest part of the year to see it fares.

Took a 200 mile road trip today and the temps peaked at 202°F driving 75MPH in 95°F ambient temperatures. More to follow as I collect data.
