Audio - hot gain on USB input

I’m getting a lot of distortion when using the USB audio input from an iPhone. (Works fine on Bluetooth, but would like to use the USB for charging purposes.) Is there a way to reduce the input gain? Can’t change the iPhone audio output level.

It's a digital input, not an analog one. No gain controls there.
