so the tow package never came with the 850w fans interesting, i dont tow but many people here do tow with the JL and some people paid for the tow package on the JL, i dont know why you would say that it was not built for towing but anyways, they both use the same radiator the only difference is the fan, so a 850w fan swap should be able to give you as much cooling capacity as the gladiator.
I think you are on to something here. You are going to be much happier with increased cooling capacity than with a colder thermostat. Note the Gladiator grill is also designed to allow more airflow than the JL grill.

A diaphragm-type thermostat controls the operating temperature of the engine by controlling the amount of coolant flow to the radiator. The thermostat is located inside of the thermostat housing and is serviced with the housing as one unit. On all engines the thermostat begins to open at 88°C (190°F) to allow flow to the radiator. The thermostat is fully open by 100°C (212°F). This provides quick engine warm up and overall temperature control. The same thermostat is used for winter and summer seasons. An engine should not be operated without a thermostat, except for servicing or testing. Operating without a thermostat causes other problems such as longer engine warm-up time, unreliable warm-up performance, increased exhaust emissions and crankcase condensation. This condensation can result in sludge formation. The wax motor is located in a sealed container at the spring end of the thermostat. When heated, the internal wax expands, overcoming closing spring tension and water pump pressure to force the valve to open.
To be correct, water pump pressure has nothing to do with the opening of a thermostat....just the expansion of the wax. You can boil water and test a thermostat for movement.

Just posted the section from ShopKey regarding the Jeep JL.

Manufacturers run high engine temps to reduce emissions. They spec thinner oil to increase CAFE. Both are okay, within a range of parameters. Repeatedly drifting out of those parameters, higher temps & extended oil change intervals, is where problems start.

I'm running 5w-30 Valvoline (Dexos) in my new Wrangler Sport S 3.6, I also have a RIPP 180° thermostat for newer JL (185° is stamped on the housing). Haven't installed it yet...RIPP says it opens 12mm compared to 7mm for the stock 210° thermo.

I had excellent results reducing the temp on two BMWs, my '13 128i (the last 3 liter non-turbo six) always ran hot when stuck in traffic. I took the thermo housing out, took it apart, searched for a similar diameter 180° thermo to replace the 205°. Worked perfectly, overheating in traffic was gone. One note of caution: do NOT go below 180°, the engine will stay in cold-start mode.

Final note: my C8 Corvette specs 0w-40 oil. They also spec "Dexos", which is GM's approval for proper cold start viscosity. IMO, every engine should run a Dexos-approved oil, certainly in colder climates.

Jeep Wrangler JL anyone makes a lower temp thermostat ? RIPP

i never said thats how it works, i said that the cooling system is maintaining the minimum operating temp of the oem thermostat at 203, can it maintain a idle temp of 190 with a 190 thermostat ? 180 with a 180 thermostat ? i dont know maybe maybe not. il give it a shot and make a video if you can link me a lower temp thermostat, if it doesnt maintain a lower idle temp you get to say i told you so.
The only result of using a cooler thermostat on trail will be the thermostat will open at 160, and then climb to 230. Thermodynamics, you still need to remove the heat of the engine at operating condition. The other result will be increased cylinder/piston wear because the cylinders do not get get to fully expand at DESIGN temperature of 195/203. Lastly, your engine computer will go crazy.

Your coolant is fine to 265. No I don't think 230 is fine, but reduce power and you reduce heat. Or get fan on earlier.

BTW using 160 is the old school way to "get by" with an engine that had cooling issues. If you only drove 10 minutes to work it would stay cooler, but would still overheat over time.

I would not try anything below 180, let us know.
