I've looked at many options (since I have the 5" LCD basic unit) and also would like some decent sound (above/around wind noise). Since I have the two door, I've spoken with the Alpine tech support and am going to try the following:

Alpine PSS-23WRA - great option for space saving as sub and amp fit under passenger seat (with a mounting bracket the bastards won't sell separately), and then R tweeters replace top of dash stock units. Found this on ebay for $700.
Also adding Alpine R S65 coaxials to the soundbar with Metra 1015 mods.
Ordered the Insane JL3001, which the tech at Alpine said should still be plug and play with the other new equipment.
Not sure what to do yet with the knee speakers, since they're such a pain. One tech did tell me they shouldn't be horrible with a decent DSP, which I'm hoping the JL3001 unit will work for. Would still like to hear (figuratively and literally) how your final setup sounds. I've read the Focals and Hertz (at least their better models) sound incredible with a decent amp.

Also I added an external amp/DSP under the passenger seat to drive the Hertz speakers in front and above. With the pac amp pro I was able to keep the stock alpine amp driving the stock sub for now. The plan is still to install the stealthbox (needs a bit of plastic cutting) with another amp to drive it.

I was too annoyed at the crap that Alpine put in there as a "Premium" system to give them more money and I'm quite happy with the Hertz sound.

If you keep the stock head unit may need something like the pac amp pro to make it work. Try Crutchfield to see what they advise.
thanks, crutchfield definitely seems to be the most helpful team

Although I am very deep into the audiophile world, I just don't even mess with it in vehicles. Between the size, speaker placements, and road noise it's just impossible to get a really high quality sound in my opinion. You can make it sound better, but I've never felt the improvements were really worth the effort.
Well said. I completely agree.

I’m not an audiophile, but I’ve owned a lot of cars and I always opt for the premium sound upgrade and JL’s Apline system blows them all away. I’ve even found a new appreciation for songs I’ve owned for decades when they play through the Jeep’s Alpine system. In fact, a big driver to me getting another JL is the Alpine system. It exceeds expectations for sound systems in general and even more impressive given It’s in a car with the worst tire and wind noise with a tent for a roof.

Given the loud Jeep cabin environment, trying to upgrade this thing to sound like a home audio system in a well insulated house would be like buying a OLED 4K TV to watch through a dirty screen door.

I haven’t done anything yet, but have identified that my previous post won’t work. There’s a video of an Apline tech doing a presentation on YouTube that identifies crossover points. The dash isn’t tweeters, it almost full range, and the kick panels are just mid base, not standard mids.

As such, the 3.5s are the most important part of the system, and tweeters won’t accomplish the required frequency range.
that’s the first thing I thought of the first time I sat in my wrangler, really needs some highs up on the dash, I guessed right away there was no real tweeter there.
